Given that fans have been eagerly anticipating The Last of Us season 2 for more than two years, it’s understandable that they aren’t contemplating the potential conclusion of the series at this moment in time.
Yet, we might have gained a more precise idea about its arrival time, given that co-creator Craig Mazin has clearly stated that the series won’t surpass the original games.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, it was mentioned that Mazin’s co-creator and game creator Neil Druckmann hadn’t initially intended to create a third game in the series. Instead, they had discussed transforming the second game into two seasons – effectively making seasons 2 and 3.
When inquired about potentially expanding the series’ storyline beyond season 3 and venturing into game territory, Mazin clearly stated: “I have no plans to delve into the games. Let me make that clear.

Mazin made sure to express that he and Druckmann weren’t aiming for a profit-grabbing move, but rather, the choice to conclude the series in an unconventional manner might stem from creative decisions.
Mazin stated: “Essentially, I’m investing a significant portion of my remaining years into creating this show. Crafting it has been incredibly challenging, and it needs a conclusion.
Well, I won’t venture beyond these games for now. It’s possible that a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us series could materialize at some point in the future, though.
For my part, the sole point of contemplation is whether we’ll need another season or if it would be better split into two. If everything necessary can be accomplished within a single additional season, that would be ideal. However, should it seem more appropriate to divide it into two parts, then that’s the route we’ll take.
So there we have it – it seems the show will end with either its third or fourth season.
Additionally, Mazin expressed some reservations when the idea of spin-offs was brought up. As an avid fan of the game, he admitted that he would eagerly watch a “Chronicle of Joel prequel.” However, he clarified that HBO had not approached them with such a proposal and instead were maintaining a thoughtful approach towards the story that he and Druckmann are crafting.
Before discussing any future seasons or spin-offs, it’s important to note that Season 2 is set to debut this month, bringing back Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie for another emotionally charged trek through a post-apocalyptic world.
