Spider-Man, your local friendly hero, is beginning anew. This is what actor Tom Holland referred to as “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start“, the title for the upcoming fourth Sony-Marvel Studios Spider-Man film announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Notably, this movie has a new title (the first without “home” in it), a new director (Destin Daniel Cretton from “Shang-Chi” replacing trilogy director Jon Watts), a fresh logo, and a cast of new characters.
In the wake of the mind-boggling twist in No Way Home, Spider Man: Brand New Day offers a clean slate, as Tom Holland hinted cryptically from the set of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. This is all he would divulge, for the mysterious spell cast by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) has wiped Spider-Man’s secret identity and even his memories as Peter Parker, safeguarding the multiverse.
2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” concluded with Peter being left by girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and buddy Ned (Jacob Batalon), as well as his mentors like Doctor Strange and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). This marked a fresh start for the street-level hero, who was once an Avenger under the guidance of the late Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The “Brand New Day” strategy seen in the 2008 era of Marvel’s “Amazing Spider-Man” comics seems to have been the inspiration for this back-to-basics approach.
Following Spider-Man’s decision to reveal his identity for the Superhuman Registration Act during the events of “Civil War”, he eventually clashed with Iron Man’s registration ideals. As a result, he joined Captain America’s resistance team of heroes and was compelled to live as a fugitive, hiding from those seeking him out.
In prison, the notorious crime boss, Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin, arranged for a hitman to eliminate Peter Parker, along with his family – his wife Mary Jane Watson and his aunt May.
Spider-Man: One More Day
During a moment when the sniper’s bullet struck May, an urgently determined Spiderman, donning a black suit, attempted to preserve her life despite being hunted by law as an outlaw due to the incidents in Civil War and Spiderman: Back in Black. These events culminated in the four-part series titled Spider-Man: One More Day, which unfolded across Amazing Spider-Man #544, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24, Sensational Spider-Man #41, and Amazing Spider-Man #545 in 2007.
Apart from terminating Spider-Man’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson, the contentious storyline of “One More Day” also led to a rewrite of their relationship status. Instead of being married, they remained as Peter Parker’s longstanding girlfriend. In a desperate attempt to save his ailing Aunt May, Peter and MJ sought aid from virtually every character in the Marvel Universe. Ultimately, they accepted the deal proposed by Mephisto: to relinquish their love and marriage in order to restore Aunt May’s life.
In issue 545 of The Amazing Spider-Man, we find ourselves back at Aunt May’s residence in Forest Hills, an unexpected turn of events for our hero. Here, Aunt May is still alive and well, while their romantic history has evolved to the point where Mary Jane is no longer his girlfriend. Moreover, it seems that the world at large has somehow lost all memory of Peter Parker’s dual identity as both himself and Spider-Man.
At first, there was speculation that Mephisto concealed Spider-Man’s true identity within his powers. However, it wasn’t until the story in Spider-Man: One Moment In Time (2010) that it was disclosed. It turned out that Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four had employed a mix of magic and science to erase everyone’s memory about Spider-Man’s identity, except for Mary Jane.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
2007’s “Brand New Day” storyline, penned by Dan Slott and illustrated by Phil Jemenez, established Spider-Man’s fresh situation. With supercrime at an unprecedented low thanks to the orderly and licensed group of heroes, Peter Parker enjoyed a several-month hiatus from his role as an unlawful vigilante.
2008 was the year I found myself on a Brand New Day as Spider-Man in Amazing Spidey #546. This soft reboot wasn’t just a fresh start for me, but it also meant more frequent adventures, with different creative teams taking turns. I teamed up with Slott and Steve McNiven one moment, then Guggenheim and Larroca the next, and later Bob Gale and Jimenez before Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo joined forces with yours truly!
Spider-Man: Brand New Cast
In this new turn of events, I found myself rubbing shoulders with a fresh set of faces. My long-lost friend, Harry Osborn, resurfaced from Europe, rewriting his demise as the Green Goblin back in 1993’s Spectacular Spider-Man #200. Clean and sober, he acquired our old college haunt, The Coffee Bean, and started courting the high-society lady, Lily Hollister – a relationship that would eventually lead to her transformation into another Green Goblin, known as Menace.
Peter eventually started dating Carlie Cooper, Lily’s close friend who’s a forensic expert with the police department. After that relationship ended, he briefly saw Michele Gonzales, the sister of his former roommate and NYPD officer Vin Gonzales. At the same time, Aunt May, in good health, was actively volunteering at F.E.A.S.T., a homeless shelter run by philanthropist Martin Li.
In the comic book series “Amazing Spider-Man” written by J. Michael Straczynski, May (Peter Parker’s aunt) discovered her nephew’s secret identity as Spider-Man. This knowledge was not exclusive to her, as villains like Norman Osborn and Eddie Brock were also aware of Spider-Man’s true identity. At that point, Peter Parker was working as a freelance photographer at The Daily Bugle, which had been bought by J. Jonah Jameson’s competitor, Dexter Bennett, and was subsequently rebranded as The DB.
Spider-Man: Brand New Villains
Peter picked up his Spider-Man duties as Mister Negative, the villain who was actually Martin Li’s dark side persona, pursued a deadly toxin known as Devil’s Breath (a plotline depicted in the 2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man video game).
During the Brand New Day phase of my favorite superhero Spider-Man’s journey, I found myself facing a host of fresh adversaries. Among them were Overdrive, a tech-whiz with an obsession for speed; the corrupt cops who misused my Spider-Tracers to falsely accuse me as a serial killer; the new Green Goblin, Menace; the genetically altered Freak; Dr. Rabin/Emissary, a deity from Wayep; Screwball, a parkour sensation on social media; the dimensionally-compressed Paper Doll; and the latest iteration of Kraven, Ana Kravinoff, daughter of the legendary Kraven the Hunter.
In the New Avengers team, Spiderman was part of Earth’s most powerful heroes that thwarted the secret takeover attempt by shape-shifting extraterrestrials known as the Secret Invasion. This incident paved the way for Spiderman’s longtime adversary, Norman Osborn (formerly the Green Goblin), to launch his power grab, titled the Dark Reign, where he became the leader of H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Dark Avengers – a group of villains disguising as heroes. Osborn then unleashed his Thunderbolts, which included Venom (Mac Gargan), Bullseye, Radioactive Man, and Songbird, against Spiderman. However, Spiderman teamed up with Eddie Brock, who had been transformed into Anti-Venom due to Mister Negative’s healing abilities, to fight back against the Thunderbolts.
In the midst of battling fresh adversaries, Spider-Man unexpectedly gained an ally in Jackpot – a fiery-haired hero previously thought to be his girlfriend Mary Jane, but who was actually Sara Ehret. After retiring and selling her superhero identity, Sara passed it on to her friend Alana Jobson. Alana employed a concoction of risky substances, including the hazardous MGH (Mutant Growth Hormone), to transform into a crime-fighting vigilante, ultimately leading to her demise.
In the storyline of Brand New Day, for every fresh adversary that emerged, there was a reappearance of classic Spider-Man enemies such as Shocker, Hammerhead, the Enforcers, and Scorpion. Recall that in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Bokeem Woodbine’s Shocker and Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan/Scorpion were put behind bars at the end. Could it be possible that they will reemerge to disrupt Spidey’s fresh start?
Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31, 2026.
