This drama revolves around the sport of soccer, yet, as portrayed in the production, “soccer is more than just soccer.” That’s what makes “Dear England” at the National Theatre a captivating and moving experience for two hours.
Many individuals know the captivating tale: A football squad, repeatedly advancing to semi-finals, finals, quarterfinals, then back to the finals once more. This group was determined to attain a feat unmatched in half a century; they aimed to rectify the infamous missed penalty from 1996 – It’s an inspiring narrative that epitomizes resilience and camaraderie.
Under the leadership of Gwilym Lee portraying Gareth Southgate and backed by an extraordinarily gifted ensemble, this production serves as a reflection of the power that comes from blending exceptional skills, much like in football, where teamwork yields remarkable results.
If you’re a fan of football and know the real-life personalities, some jokes and portrayals might resonate more deeply, and you may even find the acting more enjoyable. Even though I’ve never watched an entire football match, my lack of knowledge didn’t diminish my enjoyment (just like not knowing who Eddie the Eagle was didn’t affect my enjoyment of that sports movie). The special effects during the game scenes were thrilling, which has sparked a new interest in watching football matches for me.
In those instances where the performance transcends mere competition, it truly soars to new heights. Since its inception, it has been about fostering mental well-being and overcoming the hurdles posed by an atmosphere that can sometimes be reluctant to accept such issues.
Pippa Grange, portrayed by Liz White, skillfully demonstrates the underlying tension in her dealings with both coaches and players. This ongoing theme binds the narrative, underscoring the significance of camaraderie and unity within a team.
As the second act progresses, the play explores more deeply the influence of the sport on society. Scenes featuring Tane Siah’s character Saka, Kadell Herida’s character Sancho, and Jude Carmichael’s character Rashford come to the fore, illustrating how football intertwines with broader societal issues. Particularly relevant is the ongoing problem of racism in the game, a sad truth that continues to persist today within the sport.
These three performers strive to bridge football with society as a whole in an immediate and unprecedented manner. Although it doesn’t dwell extensively on this subject, it does spark contemplation. It evokes productions such as Roy Williams’s “Sing Yer Hearts Out for the Lads.
Before stepping into the theater, we’re already aware of the play’s outcome. Yet, the 150 minutes that follow are captivating. Regardless of whether you’re a football fan or not, this is a story about faith and it showcases a nation learning “the art of losing.” By the end, you’ll find yourself beaming from ear to ear.
