In terms of the Gundam series, there’s an abundance of mech stories yet to unfold in the future. Even though this cherished anime often explores fresh territories, it’s never shied away from revisiting classic tales from Mobile Suit Gundam’s past. One of the most anticipated returns is that of Mobile Fighter G Gundam, as a new sequel series has been launched due to a series of novels. To mark this anime’s thirtieth anniversary, not only will a “voice drama” spin a fresh yarn, but it also intends to invite one of the most iconic voice actors from the anime to reprise their characters.
If you’re unfamiliar with Master Asia, he’s the skilled martial artist who trained Domon Kasshu, the main character from the show “G Gundam,” on Gundam combat techniques. In the sequel novel series titled “The East is Burning Red: Legend of the Three Heroes – The Jewel of the East,” the lead character is Master Asia’s child, also known as Master Junior. Although it hasn’t been officially announced yet, there might be a new anime adaptation based on this series in the future, considering the rich storyline that’s still untapped from the original “G Gundam” story.
G Gundam Creator Talks The Mech Franchise
Just had an amazing conversation with the director behind the iconic mech series, G Gundam – Goro Taniguchi! In our chat, he hinted at a potential comeback for the anime. When asked about this possibility, he said, “I’ve never really considered it. I feel like my time contributing to the Gundam universe has come to an end. If there’s ever a chance, it would be for G Gundam. My mentor, Yasuhiro Imagawa, is the director of this series. If I were Domon, the main character, he would be like Master Asia to me. We have that kind of relationship. If he ever called on me, I’d find it tough to turn down his request.” As a huge fan, hearing this gives me so much excitement for what could potentially lie ahead!
Taniguchi openly discussed his perspectives about the present condition of the Gundam franchise, voicing his concerns without sugarcoating. He stated, “Currently, Gundam has transformed into a business venture rather than solely a creative project. I admire the dedication of the team striving to bring something fresh and innovative compared to previous series. Yet, there’s always the danger of appealing only to die-hard fans, which might restrict its audience. I express this concern because I believe that Gundam has noticeably decreased the number of robot-themed animes in Japan. There’s been a growing trend among Japanese viewers who say they can enjoy this anime only because it is a Gundam. This trend could lead to the downfall of the robot genre.
