Nintendo Switch 2 Unveiled for June Launch

At long last, Nintendo has unveiled the much-anticipated successor to its Nintendo Switch console, aiming not only for hardware improvements but also to usher in a fresh era for the esteemed Japanese gaming company. The new console is slated for release on June 5, 2025, with pre-orders available from April 9. Alongside this latest model comes an exciting roster of flagship games, such as “Mario Kart World”, “Donkey Kong Bonanza”, and a new installment in the “Hyrule Warriors” series.

During Nintendo Direct in the morning, they didn’t reveal the cost, but they did announce a launch bundle priced at $500 that comes with Mario Kart World. The basic model without the game will sell for $450. A website specifically for the Switch 2 is anticipated to launch later today, providing further pricing and pre-order details.

Flagship Titles and First-Party Game Highlights

Nintendo is swiftly showcasing the strength of its intellectual properties by releasing an array of exclusives, some even planned for the release period of the Switch 2, and not limiting it to just that timeframe.

Mario Kart World – Launch Title

Launching into the revamped Mario Kart Universe, this time around boasted a significant enhancement over its predecessors. The game seamlessly combines traditional kart racing with open-world features. Gamers are free to roam expansive areas between races, discover hidden paths, engage with characters, and snap in-game selfies with friends as they go.

Each level features realistic day-night transitions and weather variations, introducing brand new power-ups and an enhanced Donkey Kong character. The game is set to have a standalone Nintendo Direct presentation on April 17th.

Donkey Kong Bonanza – July 17, 2025

In a highly anticipated comeback, the game “Donkey Kong Bonanza” introduces an innovative spin to the genre by enabling players to alter the environment dynamically as they play, transforming the world in real-time.

Game settings adapt according to player actions, revealing concealed locales or generating fresh routes dynamically. Its art design is richly influenced by lush rainforests, evoking memories of the game “Tropical Freeze“, yet offering a higher level of interactivity than ever experienced before.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment – Late 2025

In the latest addition to the Hyrule Warriors sequence, titled “Age of Imprisonment,” Omega Force makes its comeback. This installment delves into the legendary history of Hyrule, serving as a precursor to the events in “Tears of the Kingdom.

Anticipate epic, Dynasty Warriors-esque mass battles, multiplayer split-screen for local cooperation, and a roster of fresh characters boasting powerful Musou-style finishing moves.

The DuskBloods – 2026

In an unexpected move, FromSoftware’s latest game, The DuskBloods, adopts a visual aesthetic reminiscent of Bloodborne rather than its contemporary Souls series.

Nintendo has released just a brief sneak peek, yet initial glimpses seem to highlight rapid, intense hand-to-hand battles and gruesome foe aesthetics. This game is set to be exclusive to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 upon its release in 2026.

Kirby Air Ride (2026)

Masahiro Sakurai will be back, bringing us an updated take on the cherished racing game from the GameCube era, known as Kirby Air Ride.

The revised edition will likely encompass online multiplayer, personalized flight experiences, and construction of tracks, enhancing a relatively unacknowledged Nintendo gem with additional layers of complexity.

Sleek Design and Smart Innovations

The Switch 2 boasts numerous hardware enhancements compared to its earlier model. This console showcases a 7.9-inch 1080p IPS LCD screen with HDR, enhanced cooling through additional top vents, and a pair of JoyCons with a magnetically attached design and a more comfortable rounded shape for improved grip.

The JoyCon controllers can now be separately disconnected via buttons at the backside, and they can each be charged independently using the latest charging grip accessory.

This system boasts a built-in memory of 256 gigabytes, features two USB-C connectors, and offers immersive 3D sound through compatible headphones. The dock delivers stunning 4K resolution, high dynamic range visuals, and even comes equipped with an integrated cooling fan to ensure smooth performance during prolonged TV use.

GameChat, “C” Button, and Mouse Controls

Nintendo has emphasized a unique aspect – the “C” button found beneath the Home button on the right JoyCon. This button triggers GameChat, a brand new social platform developed by Nintendo, enabling users to chat with their friends using the integrated microphone, observe their live gameplay regardless of the games they’re playing, and zoom into their screens during game sessions.

To enjoy GameChat, it’s necessary to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription; however, newly acquired systems come with a complimentary one-month trial to let you test out the platform. Additionally, parental control features were demonstrated, enabling parents to grant approval for their kids’ connection requests.

To expand upon the gaming experience, both JoyCons have been equipped with mouse-like control capabilities, which will significantly improve compatible games such as “Civilization VII”. During their presentation, Nintendo put a great emphasis on this feature. Additionally, there’s a camera accessory that places the user’s face at the center of video feeds and automatically blurs the background. However, the image quality of this accessory is uncertain based on the footage shown during the Direct.

Nintendo Switch Online Expands with GameCube Support

Starting now, Nintendo Switch Online service will include GameCube games as part of its Expansion Pack, such as “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker,” “Soul Caliber 2” (featuring the GameCube-exclusive Link character), and “F-Zero GX.” These titles allow for both local and online multiplayer sessions among up to four players.

As a die-hard gaming enthusiast and proud owner of a Nintendo Switch, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release! Not only are we getting an update, but it also brings along a brand new GameCube controller. However, this controller will be exclusively available to those who are members of Switch Online – so if you aren’t already, maybe it’s time to join the club! Over the past few years, Nintendo fans have been eagerly requesting GameCube emulation, and it seems like our prayers have been answered. This is truly a dream come true for us retro gaming aficionados!

Three Tiers of Game Compatibility

Nintendo clarified that Switch 2 will support three types of games:

1. New Versions of Two Exclusives – For example, games such as Mario Kart World and DuskBloods designed specifically for the latest hardware.

2. Enhanced Editions – Classic games that receive updates like HDR, mouse control, or improved camera support, such as Super Mario Party Jamboree. These require purchasing an upgrade pack.

3. Multi-Console Titles – Games including Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends Z-A, and the special editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, playable on both consoles.

The upcoming Zelda games will sync with the Nintendo Today app, enabling players to traverse challenging locations more easily and exchange game content.

Massive Third-Party Support

In a surprising turn, Nintendo’s unveiling of the Switch 2 featured some significant third-party collaborations that left many stunned. Historically, Nintendo has been more protective of its proprietary games, but it appears they might be broadening their horizons with the upcoming Switch 2.

During today’s Nintendo Direct, we saw trailers for:

  • Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition
  • Hades II
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
  • Civilization VII with full mouse support

If Cyberpunk 2077 operates smoothly on the Steam Deck, Nintendo is optimistic that it will also dazzle on the Switch 2. These adaptations indicate a strong effort to combine the allure of portable gaming with the richness of AAA titles.

Looking Ahead

Previously discussed aspects such as the Virtual Game Cards, enabling users to share games across devices, have been highlighted before during previous Directs. However, today, Nintendo has emphasized that they are not competing with Sony or Microsoft head-to-head. Instead, they are forging their own distinctive path once more.

Now, everyone is looking forward to April 9, when pre-orders become available, as well as to June 5, the day the Switch 2 will be released for sale.
