Nintendo has officially unveiled the much-anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch, following months of intense speculation that left many of our colleagues at Nintendo Life on tenterhooks.
The main story today revolves around a new console that looks promising as it builds upon its highly-acclaimed precursor. It packs enough power under the hood to smoothly handle games from the PlayStation 4 era.
However, following their recent presentation, it seems that the company hasn’t made significant strides yet to attract multi-platform gaming enthusiasts.
Although it boasts a few exclusive titles such as the innovative Mario Kart World and the creatively unique Donkey Kong Bananza, the majority of its current content seems to consist of games that have been ported across multiple formats.
Since Nintendo boasts a unique collection of in-house game creators, it’s likely that the current situation will shift quickly. However, it’s worth noting that over half of the confirmed Switch 2 launch titles are adaptations of older PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games.
For Switch players, these games will certainly be fresh, but for those viewing through a PlayStation lens, it can be challenging to get thrilled about offerings like Hitman: World of Assassination and Yakuza 0, as they’ve already dropped in price on the PlayStation Store.
They’re great games, of course – but we’ve already played them to death.
It’s challenging to fully grasp at this moment how similar the performance of the Switch 2 might be to the PS5, or if it will have the capability to run modern games such as hypothetical titles like Grand Theft Auto 6.
For the past few years, Sony has largely gone its own way, with Nintendo Switch typically unable to run the major games of PS5 and PS4. However, should the upcoming Switch 2 release these software titles simultaneously with other platforms, it could shift the conversation about the PlayStation ecosystem.
It’s important to note that Nintendo’s latest console retails at around the same price point as a PlayStation 5 Slim and Astro Bot package, which costs approximately $449.99. On the other hand, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is slightly more affordable at just $399.99.
Furthermore, the PS5 boasts 1 Terabyte of storage capacity compared to the Switch 2’s 256 Gigabytes. Notably, features such as party chat are accessible without a subscription on the PS5, whereas they require a subscription on Nintendo’s console.
Despite being relatively expensive for a console that’s already been around for five years, the PS5 holds its ground quite well when compared to the brand-new Switch 2. Granted, they are distinct products: one is primarily designed for home use, while the other offers the flexibility of both home and portable gaming.
The key point of discussion about Nintendo today involves the cost of its flagship game, Mario Kart World. In the U.S., it costs $79.99, while it’s even pricier physically in Europe. This price hike could pave the way for future increases in game prices, potentially influencing the PS5’s pricing as well. As of now, major Sony exclusives debut at a launch price of $69.99.
As a dedicated PlayStation fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over the intriguing announcement of an exclusive for the Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods, from the esteemed developers at FromSoftware. Initially, its visual aesthetic seemed reminiscent of Bloodborne, but subsequent announcements revealed that it’s actually a multiplayer game.
Fans of Sony might find themselves feeling somewhat bitter about this disclosure. Not only does the creator of PlayStation have a share in FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa, but for the last ten years, the platform owner has shown little interest in exploiting the Bloodborne intellectual property.
Initially, Demon’s Souls was exclusively available on PS3 but later transformed into the cross-platform Dark Souls series due to issues with its initial release. Now, it seems a similar scenario is emerging with The Duskblods, although more information about this game is required before we can make any definitive statements.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the potential impact of the Switch 2 on the PS5. Currently, it seems more like a pricey method to enjoy games we’ve already got in our collection.
However, you can be sure of it, the hardware won’t remain unsold. Already, it seems that Nintendo has managed to secure the support of all significant game publishers.
For now, the overall impression seems a bit lackluster as we’re yet to witness an increase in first-hand content and simultaneous multi-format releases. However, this could change in the future.
