Netflix Brings Legendary Shojo Anime Film ‘The Rose of Versailles’ to Fans This April!

While the film was already screened in Japan on January 31st, 2025, and garnered favorable reviews domestically, the international streaming release has been under wraps. On X, Netflix Anime announced that MAPPA’s film adaptation of “The Rose of Versailles” will be available for streaming only on Netflix starting April 30th, 2025. To celebrate the event, Netflix has also released an English-subtitled trailer preview, along with an official English poster and images from the movie featuring Marie Antoinette, Oscar, Fersen, and André. MAPPA’s The Rose of Versailles is Coming to Netflix in April

Originally announced during celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the series in 2022, “The Rose of Versailles” was a project long in development. MAPPA wasn’t confirmed as the animation studio until July 2024. As anticipated, the film premiered in Japanese cinemas in January 2025. Despite MAPPA typically producing gruesome shonen hits like “Chainsaw Man,” “Jujutsu Kaisen,” and “Attack on Titan,” this project was a massive success, earning 108,158,300 yen at the Japanese box office, with even the original creator, Riyoko Ikeda, commending the adaptation for its adherence to the source material.

The Rose of Versailles debuts on April 30th, exclusively on Netflix. This series follows Oscar, Marie Antoinette, Fersen, and André, whose lives become intertwined in the tumultuous times of the French Revolution.
