The upcoming season of Doctor Who is nearly here – but, what lies ahead for the Time Lord after 2025?
According to Russell T Davies, who oversees the production of the BBC sci-fi series, a decision about a third season featuring Ncuti Gatwa won’t be made until after his second series of episodes has been broadcast. This second series will start airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 12th April.
Disney Plus, having collaborated with the BBC on the last two series of this show, needs to give approval for additional episodes before filming can commence.
He confirmed there will be no decision made regarding the series until after season 2. It’s amusing because even those who work on the show speculate about secret discussions we might be having. People I collaborate with yearly ask me, “What’s actually going on?”, to which I respond, “Nothing! No meetings, no secrets.”
The decision on this matter won’t be made by our colleagues at Disney Plus; instead, it will come from an executive in some distant office. As of now, it seems like there are no developments or decisions being made.

Indeed, it’s been affirmed by Davies that the creative team behind Doctor Who has both prepared and devised several alternative routes for the show’s future direction.
Prepared and excited! We have multiple strategies at the ready, each one potentially leading us in a different direction. It’s our task to be prepared… but we’ll see. Eagerly waiting to discover the outcome! Let’s hope for the best!
This season on the show, Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, has become a new traveling companion to the Doctor as they explore together on board the TARDIS.
Sethu portrays Belinda as the central figure in her personal narrative, someone unafraid to be independent of the Doctor’s influence – and fans should eagerly anticipate the comeback of Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, a key character in the early glimpses from the approaching season.
Moreover, Anita Dobson will once again take on the mysterious character of Mrs. Flood, suggesting potential new twists and turns in her storyline.
Besides Freddie Fox, Christopher Chung, Rose Ayling-Ellis, and familiar characters from UNIT like Jemma Redgrave and Bonnie Langford, other notable performers will also be appearing.
Each installment of the upcoming series consists of eight parts, penned by Russell T Davies along with collaborators such as Pete McTighe, Juno Dawson, Inua Ellams, and Sharma Angel-Walfall.
Starting this coming Saturday, April 12th at 6:50pm, Doctor Who will air on BBC One in the United Kingdom. For those in the U.K., new episodes will also be accessible starting at 8am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer. For viewers outside of the U.K., the series can be found on Disney Plus.
