Today marks the arrival of an exciting development as Netflix unveils a fresh, animated spin on the universe of “Devil May Cry“. This new series, orchestrated by creator Adi Shankar, centers around Dante, the demon hunter, who gets entangled in a plot to demolish the boundaries between the human world and the netherworld. The animated series is packed with scenes and combats that contributed to the legendary status of the Capcom franchise within the gaming community. Interestingly, this Netflix release also acknowledges another Capcom series through homage. Intriguingly, “Devil May Cry” contains a significant nod to “Resident Evil”, and you may be surprised by how this crossover unfolds.
Head’s up! If you prefer to enjoy Devil May Cry without spoilers, beware as we might touch on some potentially revealing details in the third episode of Netflix’s newest animated series. In this installment, our hero Dante isn’t having his best time. Apprehended by an elite demon-hunting team called Darkcom, both Dante and his frenemy Enzo find themselves tightly bound. A menacing demonic rabbit with a penchant for Dante is causing quite a stir, forcing the U.S government to seek answers from our protagonist to prevent impending calamity. While conversing between Enzo and Dante, the latter mentions that this assignment ranks among the worst, but hints at another job in a well-known Capcom setting being even worse.
Resident Evil May Cry
In a fascinating turn of events, Enzo discloses that one of Dante’s most dreadful jobs was in Raccoon City, the city renowned for initiating the Resident Evil series. This city, infamous for its zombie-infested streets, served as the backdrop for Resident Evils 1 to 3. However, after the city was overrun by zombies and other T-Virus infected creatures, the US government decided to obliterate it from orbit. The fact that Dante was somehow involved in these events adds a humorous layer to the story. If ever animated, this connection between the two video game universes would undoubtedly generate quite a buzz. Here’s an Easter Egg that ties these two gaming worlds together.

Interestingly, it turns out that the action-packed game, Devil May Cry, was initially planned as part of the Resident Evil franchise, specifically as Resident Evil 4. However, developers at Capcom decided that Dante’s wild adventures might have been too far-fetched for the more survival-horror oriented series. Instead, Resident Evil 4 was reworked to center around Leon Kennedy, while Dante was granted his own franchise that has continued to thrive ever since.
Resident Evil Anime When?
For the past few years, Netflix has significantly featured the Resident Evil series. Although it was limited to just one season, the Capcom franchise underwent a live-action transformation, with Lance Reddick embodying the antagonist Albert Wesker. Additionally, Netflix produced an original animated series titled “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness“, but there have been no updates regarding a future project centered around Raccoon City on their platform as of now.
Fortunately, there’s an exciting Resident Evil project on the horizon with a new live-action film being developed by Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian. Slated for release in fall 2026, Cregger has hinted at his intention to make this film scarier than any previous installment in the franchise.
