Pulse Finale: Shocking Twists and Danny's Fate Revealed!

As I’ve reached episode 10 of Netflix’s gripping medical series, Pulse, I find myself more puzzled than enlightened. There are still a myriad of unanswered questions swirling around in my mind.

In the second-to-last episode, Zoe Robyn’s high-speed series unveiled a startling truth: Xander (Colin Woodell) wasn’t concealing a work romance that was covered up by his old hospital, but instead, he had agreed to a Non-Disclosure Agreement following an incident where he was responsible for a patient’s death.

As numerous outcomes hung in the air – from Nia’s grave situation, Daniala Nieves’ departure, and Willa Fitzgerald’s possible dismissal – the tension leading to the finale reached an all-time high, with each decision potentially having significant consequences.

But how did it wrap up?

Let’s break down the ending of Pulse.

Unexpectedly, the arrogant patient whom Danny had shoved in the lobby during an altercation when he displayed hostility towards Harper (Jessy Yates), is later brought to the hospital by helicopter following a severe car crash involving him, his wife Catherine, and their child, who were earlier at the ER.

In a heated state and clearly upset, Glen refuses treatment from Danny due to their recent disagreement. He instead accuses the hospital of failing to address his newborn’s breathing difficulties, which led him to drive recklessly – all in an attempt to seek urgent care for his infant.

As I sat there, my eyes fixed on Dr. Cruz (Justina Machado), I could sense the tension rising, but then something magical happened. Danny, with an empathetic touch that seemed to radiate warmth, took control of the situation. His actions were like a calming balm, easing the chaos and restoring order. It was truly a sight to behold, and as a movie critic, I couldn’t help but be in awe of his skill and compassion.

Additionally, Harper’s diagnosis for the underweight infant proved accurate, giving her a sense of fulfillment. She initiates continuous monitoring treatments for the baby, while Catherine, the mother, remains in a critical state.

During Xander’s tenure at Kennedy, we see a past incident that might jeopardize his career. As a promising medical student, Xander once treated one of his recurring patients who showed up at the overcrowded ER in severe pain due to an abdomen filled with fluid.

Under pressure from his supervisor to clear a bed quickly, Dr. Bruce goads Xander into performing the fundamental procedure to drain the fluid without using ultrasound, thus leaving him to proceed in the dark.

At first, it appears that Julio has succeeded, and he feels a sense of relief as the pressure eases. However, later on, Julio collapses unconscious, and Xander understands that Julio must have accidentally severed an artery. Sadly, Julio passes away not long after, leaving Xander powerless to save him.

Overwhelmed and haunted by the loss of my last patient, I found myself on the brink of panic when I was halfway through Catherine’s chest operation. The sight of her bleeding profusely left me momentarily paralyzed. Fortunately, Danny offered a lifesaving solution, jolting me back into action to save her life.

Stricken by remorse, Xander reveals everything about the incident at Kennedy to Danny. He discloses not only the details of what happened but also how his mother concealed it all – to safeguard her own image and his too.

As Xander ponders over his own ‘unavoidable predicament’, he gains a clearer insight into Danny’s viewpoint. Danny had expressed multiple times before that she wasn’t interested in a relationship due to its complex nature, but it’s only now that Xander can truly comprehend how challenging it must have been for her.

In my humble opinion as a film aficionado, this scene showcases a character who acknowledges his mistake in hastily pushing his partner, Danny, into a relationship. He admits to failing to listen to her desires and needs, owning up to his shortcomings. Moreover, he confesses that his feelings for her remain unchanged – he still harbors love for her.

Caught off guard by the confession, Danny feels thankful that his emotions have been validated and reciprocates, expressing his love for her as well. If she were to lose her job, he proposes a fresh start, escaping the challenging office environment, and exploring if their relationship could blossom.

However, the scenario comes to an end when Cruz informs Danny later on that she has chosen her as the chief resident for the following year.

Equally joyful news: Sophia Torres, known as Vero, has been discharged from the hospital, prompting hearty cheers as she strolls through the emergency department.

Simultaneously, Cole’s (Jack Bannon) hardened actions are starting to catch up with him, as Dr. Soriano (Néstor Carbonel) emphasizes the gravity of the predicament upon discovering that Cole was secretly monitoring Nia (Ash Santos).

Since Nia’s parents can challenge her care at Maguire, Cole is advised to keep his distance from her, a situation that proves challenging because he deeply cares for her.

After enduring his belittling remarks throughout the entire series, Sophie (Chelsea Muirhead) finally confronts Cole when he alters her surgery schedule without consulting her. She inquires as to why he consistently undermines her, particularly when she performs well. Cole acknowledges his unfair treatment towards her and explains that he modified her work schedule so she no longer has to interact with him as often.

Camila catches wind of their discussion and beams with pride, as Sophie takes her advice and starts trusting in her own abilities.

Instead of Sophie’s bravery being the deciding factor, it is Cruz’s direct compliment to Camila that persuades her to remain at Maguire. This is because Cruz shares that he would be disheartened to lose a diligent student like Camila, who has received nothing but positive feedback from everyone in the ER staff.

At the conclusion of the episode, there are still many mysteries waiting to be solved. Harper urges Sam (Jessie T Usher) to express his feelings to Danny, but he dismisses any notion that their relationship is anything beyond friendship.

As Sophie and Camila’s friendship, which has been gradually growing, seems to be transitioning into something deeper, but before we can discover what’s happening, Camila’s fiancé arrives, causing an awkward exchange between them. Feeling embarrassed, Sophie departs, believing (or at least fearing) that she may have misunderstood the nature of her friendship with Camila.

The series reaches its peak during the year-end celebration, when it’s disclosed that Dr. Patrick Sanchez will take over as the ER chief, with the board deciding to remove Cruz from her role as head of the ER and instead leaving her in charge of surgery only.

Relations appear tense as Xander made a joke about Patrick being the staff member he dislikes most, hinting at a rocky bond between them. There’s also speculation about a difficult dynamic between Xander and Cruz, yet they decide to have a ‘professional-only’ lunch together.

In the climactic turn of events, I found myself taken aback when Patrick revealed his decision for the Chief Resident – none other than Sam. For just an instant, Danny and Xander seemed frozen in disbelief, but soon enough, Danny embraced Sam, stepping aside briefly to gather my thoughts once the excitement had subsided.

Cruz expresses apologies to Danny, admitting that she wasn’t aware Patrick would object to her decision, but they both acknowledge that their careers have necessitated compromises. In the end, it was Cruz who gave up the ER position to Patrick because she refused to dismiss Danny, as Xander’s parents and the board had desired. However, this decision led to Danny losing the chief resident title, although he is still allowed to remain at the medical center.

The series concludes with Danny gazing out over the sea on the beach, accompanied by Xander, who admits he’s spoken truthfully about the Kennedy incident to the hospital review board. There’s a possibility he might lose his license, but Xander is convinced it’s the right course of action, as it mirrors what Danny would have done and he aims to emulate her.

As Sam returns to the hospital for a triumphant reception and establishes his fresh workspace, Danny discards his clothes and plunges into the ocean – tranquil and unfettered, escaping the impending crisis that’s en route to Maguire, a task for Sam to manage.
