As Doctor Who’s Season 15 draws near, actor Ncuti Gatwa hinted that viewers will witness a significantly altered aspect of the Fifteenth Doctor.
It seems that fans are picking up on the fact that the next series might adopt a more somber atmosphere compared to the last one, and this shift is expected to influence the Doctor’s character as well.
At the start of season 15, during a question-and-answer session, Gatwa mentioned that there’s an episode featuring a shift in the Doctor’s character.
The Christmas episode touched upon some aspects of the Doctor’s hidden side, which he occasionally activates for the greater good. This alignment with good intentions has consistently been a part of who he is.
However, there’s a more complex side to him. As an entity that’s existed for some time, it has absorbed a touch of resentment, and I can’t wait for viewers to witness this facet.

In the 2024 Christmas special, penned by Steven Moffat and titled “Joy to the World,” the Doctor exhibited a more somber aspect as he manipulated Joy (portrayed by Nicola Coughlan) into feeling enraged, thereby enabling him to cut off her link to a Villengard briefcase.
In response to his harsh remarks about her mother, Joy shared that her mother had tragically passed away due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it’s worth noting that after realizing Joy was in distress, he promptly expressed remorse and clarified his intentions as soon as she seemed safe again.
But Gatwa’s remarks make it clear that we’re set to see more of the Doctor’s dark side.
During this current season, the Fifteenth Doctor will embark on eight fresh journeys accompanied by a new traveler, Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, commencing with “The Robot Revolution”.

Sethu recently shared with TopMob magazine his perspective on the dynamic between the Doctor and Belinda: “In our interactions, we truly stand as equals. Russell T Davies desired someone capable of challenging and not being awestruck by this omnipotent character.
Belinda was observed by Sethu as being the principal figure in her personal narrative. He went on to say, “An unhinged individual has suddenly intruded upon her life, making it impossible for her to return to her central focus or storyline.
How will she fare when robots come to whisk her away in the season opener? Only time will tell!
Doctor Who returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday 12th April 2025.
