Title “Daredevil: Reborn” delves into the metamorphosis of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), formerly an exiled crime boss, now running for Mayor in New York City. He masterfully manipulates politics while retaining his innate cruelty hidden beneath a public persona. Among those following in Fisk’s footsteps is Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini), a young campaign aid, who zealously absorbs the Kingpin’s techniques of control and influence. From the start, Blake’s fervent support for Fisk appears genuine but also slightly disconcerting, as his admiration for Fisk’s efficiency and firmness hints at a dangerous fascination with authoritarianism. As the story unfolds, Blake’s unwavering allegiance to Fisk becomes increasingly troubling due to his readiness to compromise ethics. By Episode 7, Daniel Blake takes an action from which recovery may be impossible.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 7
In the storyline ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Daniel initially joined Kingpin’s mayoral campaign, bringing youthful enthusiasm and a genuine faith in Kingpin’s vision. During the initial episodes, he managed social media outreach and grassroots interactions, skillfully communicating Kingpin’s message to a younger audience who might have been skeptical about the contentious candidate. The first significant encounter between Daniel and Kingpin defined their relationship when Daniel openly expressed his unwavering trust in Kingpin’s methods and aspired to follow in his footsteps.
At first, Daniel’s bond with journalist BB Urich (Genneya Walton) grew from his public relations tasks, where Daniel acted as a link between Fisk’s mayoral campaign and the media. Their early encounters were characterized by Daniel’s eagerness sometimes overstepping his boundaries, leading to a crucial incident at a nightclub. There, in an unintentional move, Daniel disclosed confidential information about Fisk’s plans on union contracts and port project development. BB utilized this mistake for her exposé named “Mayor Garbage,” portraying Fisk as a union-buster and causing significant political troubles for the administration. This event marked the first significant challenge to Daniel’s role within Fisk’s organization.
Daniel stood out among Fisk’s temporary underlings due to his handling of failure. Unlike others who tried to dodge responsibility or escape Fisk’s anger, Daniel openly owned up to his mistake. He vowed to stay loyal, even as he anticipated being relieved of his duties. This act of accountability, unusual in Fisk’s circle of self-centered allies, caught the mayor’s eye. Instead of the harsh punishment that was possibly due, Fisk issued a chilling yet compassionate warning: “In time, you’ll become a better man. However, if you repeat such actions, it will be your final act.” This instance marked the start of a mentorship relationship.
Daniel progressively took on more critical roles, moving from handling media liaisons to organizing communication with the contentious Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Each task served a dual purpose of testing and molding him, as Fisk kept a close eye on Daniel’s readiness to bend principles in pursuit of their mutual goal. Daniel consistently showed eagerness for these ethically debatable tasks, thereby gaining Fisk’s increasing confidence. This led eventually to his designation as Deputy Communications Director.
In Episode 7, I found myself squirming in my seat as Daniel’s transformation took an unsettling turn during a heated exchange with BB regarding her reporting on the Muse case. Although it was clear that Daredevil had been the one to apprehend the serial killer, Mayor Fisk’s administration was attempting to claim credit for their Task Force. When BB hesitated to spread this false narrative, Daniel showed a chilling new side, marked by calculation rather than journalistic integrity. “You crossed me with that ‘Mayor Garbage’ remark,” he coldly reminded her, “We may be friends, but I’m not a sucker. And you owe me.” His words left no room for doubt – our friendship was now a business transaction, and old debts needed immediate repayment.
The way Daniel shows his growth isn’t solely through the words of his threat, but also how he delivers it, using strategies he’s picked up from Fisk. He tells BB, “This is a carrot-and-stick situation,” implying that there are significant rewards and penalties at stake. When asked directly if he was threatening her, Daniel skillfully dodges the question, saying instead that he’s offering her an opportunity. With unsettling nonchalance, he informs BB that her decision will significantly influence whether the rest of her life turns out great or terrible. As she reacts with shock to this sudden shift in someone she thought was predictable, Daniel solidifies his position as a worthy successor to Fisk’s empire.
Why Daniel Blake Is More Than Just Another Kingpin Disciple
Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of Wilson Fisk has been one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) standout villain performances, offering a complex blend of intimidation, depth, and surprising vulnerability to the Kingpin. His interpretation of the character since the initial Netflix “Daredevil” series has consistently impressed both fans and critics alike, with many admiring the rich dimension he adds to what could have been a stereotypical crime boss. However, as is common in the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, even the most iconic characters eventually have their tenure come to an end.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is thoughtfully introducing a new group of heroes to continue the franchise, such as Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) stepping into Hawkeye’s role, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) inheriting Tony Stark’s legacy, and Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) maturing into her Stature character alongside her father. To keep the storylines balanced as it evolves, the MCU should also create strong replacements for its most intriguing villains. Daniel Blake’s appearance in Daredevil: Born Again is an example of strategic character development along these lines.
Michael Gandolfini delivers a unique vibrancy in his portrayal of the character, seamlessly showing Daniel’s transition from an ardent ally to a cunning enforcer. His acting brings to life both the youthful recklessness and emerging manipulative skills of the character, making his transformation appear genuine rather than contrived. The scene where he faces off with BB showcases Gandolfini’s knack for switching between friendly demeanor and subtle threats, a trait that echoes D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk in its versatility.
The show portrays Daniel as an effective candidate for taking over the Kingpin role, due to his gradual acceptance of Fisk’s ideology. This transformation appears genuine because it mirrors real-life human psychology – Daniel doesn’t suddenly choose to become a villain overnight. Instead, he moves along a path where each individual concession seems rational, but over time accumulates into significant moral deterioration.
In terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future, introducing characters such as Daniel helps tackle the problem of creating engaging adversaries when iconic villains eventually exit. While heroes often hand over their roles through well-known comic book succession stories (such as Sam Wilson taking up the Captain America mantle), villain transitions are usually less explored. By setting up Daniel as a possible successor to Fisk’s criminal empire, the Daredevil: Born Again series guarantees that even if D’Onofrio eventually leaves his role, the Kingpin’s impact can endure through a character whose growth we have already seen unfold on screen.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiere on Disney+ every Tuesday.
