The Grey Sloan doctors are staying on call.
ABC has renewed Grey’s Anatomy for a 22nd season, according to multiple outlets.
Among the shows returning to ABC is the longest-running primetime scripted series, “Grey’s Anatomy”. Besides this, other dramas such as “9-1-1”, “The Rookie”, “Will Trent”, and “Shifting Gears” have also been renewed. Previously, “Abbott Elementary” and “High Potential” were already confirmed to return in January, leaving only the fate of “Doctor Odyssey”, led by Joshua Jackson, unconfirmed on ABC.
The fresh update arrives at a time when significant transformations are underway on the set of Grey’s Anatomy, notably following Ellen Pompeo‘s decision to relinquish her primary role as Meredith Grey, effective from 2022.
Previously, the actress – currently starring in a medical drama with a recurring role – discussed her approach when transitioning from being a main cast member for nearly twenty years. She mentioned that she needed to add some variety, or as she put it, “shake things up a bit.
In the spirit of venturing into uncharted territories, I expressed on “The Drew Barrymore Show” last December, “It’s time for a change.” You see, 19 years – that’s longer than most parents keep their children at home. They usually let them go to college when they turn 18. So, this feels like my own version of going away to college.
Ellen, a mother to Stella (age 15), Sienna (age 10), and Eli (age 8) along with her spouse Chris Ivery, mentioned that scaling back her responsibilities would provide her with additional time to focus on her beloved family.
She mentioned, “I have quite a bit on my plate, but considering I have three children, I’m busy taking care of them. Spending quality time with them is very significant to me.
Ellen’s fight for equal pay at Grey’s has indeed been a significant part of her journey. She’s been vocal about this aspect of her career.
Ellen expressed on the March 18th episode of Call Her Daddy that, since I shared the same name with the show, I felt I deserved equal treatment. She added that it was more challenging to achieve this equality. Ellen stated that she wasn’t resentful about Patrick Dempsey receiving what he did; instead, she was frustrated because they didn’t appreciate her as much as they appreciated him and never will.
Nevertheless, the creator of Grey’s, Shonda Rhimes, backed her when she fought for equal pay with her male co-star in the pursuit of fairness.
Ellen shared that she had asked the person, “Shall I go ahead and ask for this amount? Is that okay with you?” She wanted to avoid appearing disrespectful or unstable, and also keep her informed about her actions because she values her. The other person responded with, “No one will just give it to you; you have to ask for it.
And now, Ellen hopes to use her platform to empower other women, too.
Reaching a certain stage, it becomes your duty to speak up for other women in your circle or work environment,” she explained. “If you find yourself earning significantly more than your female colleagues, it’s not right to simply accept this. Instead, you should take notice of everyone else’s wages and leverage your position to state, ‘I value what I have, but I believe all women are due a raise.’
