Lifting of the ban has opened the floodgates for reviews on “South of Midnight,” the thrilling third-person action-adventure story from Compulsion Games and Xbox Game Studios.
Examining the feedback on the game thus far, most reviewers seem to appreciate it, commending its storyline, visual aesthetic, and music. However, the combat mechanics and other gameplay elements appear to be sparking some debate among critics.
Currently, as I speak, the game South of Midnight is scoring a 78 on Metacritic based on 62 reviews, and it’s also earning a 78 on OpenCritic, aggregating ratings from 75 reviews.
A dark journey unlike many other games
It’s no wonder that some reviewers have differing opinions about the fight scenes in South of Midnight. While the atmosphere and narrative are generally praised by all, it’s expected that the impact of these combat sequences may vary greatly depending on individual preferences.
Personally, I found this experience quite delightful, awarding it 4 out of 5 stars in our South of Midnight review. In my opinion, “I found myself captivated by the tale of a young woman named Weaver, who is determined to save her mother. I eagerly anticipate future installments featuring Hazel. South of Midnight is a heartfelt tribute to Southern Gothic literature and the South, and I hope readers leave with a deeper understanding.
Beginning on April 8, 2025, South of Midnight will be released for play on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC (through Steam and the Xbox PC app). Since it’s an Xbox first-party game, it comes with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, as well as PC Game Pass. If you purchase the Premium Edition now, you can access South of Midnight early!
