Jon Bernthal’s Hidden Role in the Punisher Special Will Shock Fans!

In addition to playing Frank Castle (The Punisher) in an upcoming Disney+ special, Jon Bernthal will also be penning the storyline for this project. Fans of “Daredevil: Born Again” have long admired Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher, and it appears that Marvel Studios agrees, as they are collaborating with him to develop a Marvel’s Special Presentation centered around The Punisher. Reports indicate that Bernthal will work alongside his “We Own This City” director, Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is also helming The Punisher Special on directing duties. Bernthal recently shared insights into how those initial discussions evolved into the project’s realization.

Collider interviewed Jon Bernthal during CinemaCon, and when asked about Marvel’s special presentation of “The Punisher,” he expressed his deep connection with the character: “I’ve said it countless times: Frank lives within me, deeply in my heart. He matters to me.

In the conversation about what this thing might be and the portrayal of Frank that I believed the audience, military personnel, first responders, comic book enthusiasts were eagerly anticipating, Bernthal stated. “They seemed starved for it,” he added. He presented this version to them, and they not only supported him but also encouraged him to continue contributing ideas. As we collaborated with various writers, our ideas began to resonate, and I think they could see how much these ideas resonated with me. I’m fortunate to have a group of veterans I work with. One in particular, my friend Nick, has been amazing. I hope everything goes well. I don’t like discussing such matters because it feels like bark before the bite, you understand? I feel honored and grateful. It’s an exceptional team we’re putting together.

In episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again, we find Frank Castle, once more part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) sought out Frank, leading to a confrontation between these two street-level vigilantes. Their discussion was fraught with tension, as Frank criticized Matt for his reluctance to resume his role as Daredevil following the tragic death of his friend, Foggy Nelson, at the hands of Bullseye.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of TV, streaming, and animation, described the Punisher’s return in “Daredevil: Born Again” as a rapid-fire narrative style, yet filled with the deep emotions expected in a Frank Castle story. He expressed his excitement about it, stating that the concept for the Punisher Special Presentation emerged during the filming of the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” The return of Bernthal’s Punisher will be alongside other Marvel Netflix characters such as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye, Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Previously, Marvel Studios released Special Presentations titled “Werewolf by Night” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special“. With Bernthal heavily involved in the production, fans of the Punisher can rest assured that the character is being handled capably. The anticipated end result will likely maintain its high quality without compromise, a testament to Bernthal’s commitment to the project. Notably, he had expressed reservations about returning for “Daredevil: Born Again” before Marvel switched writers.
