The action-packed anime series based on “Devil May Cry” has premiered on Netflix, and its creator Adi Shankar hints at the potential for a fresh universe within the Capcom video game franchises. Known for his successful collaborations with Netflix, Shankar oversaw the launches of both “Castlevania” and “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix” animated adaptations. Each franchise has expanded into its own unique world, offering numerous opportunities for further exploration. Similarly, it appears that the initial season of “Devil May Cry” on Netflix may also establish a new universe ripe for further development.
The action series, “Devil May Cry,” has started its run on Netflix, and an episode references the “Resident Evil” franchise by mentioning a mission in Raccoon City, which is Dante’s city of origin. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean a Resident Evil anime is coming soon, ComicBook interviewed Adi Shankar about this link, who acknowledged it but remained cryptic, stating he couldn’t confirm or deny anything related to the topic. However, he expressed his fondness for Capcom, the creators of both franchises.
Will There Be a Resident Evil Anime?
In an interview with J.R. Waugh from ComicBook, Shankar was asked about the possibility of a Resident Evil anime. He said, “I can’t reveal anything on that front, really. It’s like there’s a sniper keeping an eye on us.” Later in the conversation, he expressed his admiration for Capcom’s projects, stating, “I didn’t give a direct answer to your question, and I’m still not giving one, but let me say that I have great affection for Capcom. In many ways, this series is a tribute to Devil May Cry, the movies of the early 2000s and late ’90s, and my life during those times. It’s also a tribute to Capcom, and if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll notice some references here and there, but I can say no more.
Although Shankar remains vague about the prospect of a comprehensive Capcom anime universe, it’s significant that he doesn’t reject the idea either. Intriguing allusions to Capcom can be found in the first season of ‘Devil May Cry’, hinting at potential developments in the show’s second season. However, no official announcement has been made about these hinted future events. If ‘Devil May Cry’ proves popular, it could pave the way for other Capcom series to be adapted into animation as well.
Capcom Has a Big History With Anime
As an observer, I’ve noticed that while Devil May Cry is indeed a brand-new anime on Netflix, it isn’t Capcom’s first foray into anime adaptations. Previously, the Devil May Cry, along with other popular franchises like Street Fighter and Mega Man, have also graced our screens in successful anime releases. This suggests a pattern of interest in animated versions of these video game narratives, implying there might be more such adaptations on the horizon.
In a fun and exciting nod, the hint towards Raccoon City being part of the Devil May Cry world is more than just an homage to the Resident Evil series; it’s also a playful acknowledgement of their rich shared past. Interestingly enough, an early iteration of Resident Evil 4 eventually morphed into what we now know as Devil May Cry, indicating that their connections run much deeper than what meets the eye. Although a full-fledged Resident Evil anime may not be in our future, there’s always a chance that Dante could battle through hordes of zombies once more in a potential return to Raccoon City within a future season?
