On June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 will make its debut, and it’ll be accompanied by a game originally released in 1995 for the PlayStation 1. Translation: The Nintendo Switch 2’s launch collection includes some delightful throwback to the PlayStation era. However, beyond Mario Kart World, the initial games for the Nintendo Switch 2, or its launch lineup, appear somewhat lackluster.
The game we’re discussing first appeared in arcades throughout Japan and later in the US in 1993, but it was primarily in 1995 when it was released for PlayStation 1 consoles that many people became familiar with it, particularly in North America. This iconic racing game from the 1990s is none other than Ridge Racer.
More recently, Studio Hamster unveiled Arcade Archives 2: Ride Racer, marking its debut in the Arcade Archives 2 lineup.
If you’re not already familiar, Ridge Racer is the initial game in a long-running racing series that was quite popular during the mid to late 90s but has since waned in popularity in today’s gaming landscape. Notably, no fresh installments have been released since 2016, and many fans are content with replaying the classic, nostalgic games from the series instead.
While it might be a bit of an exaggeration to claim that Ridge Racer is among the absolute greatest racing games ever made, there’s no denying that it was a trailblazer in the genre and stands as one of the top racing games from its era.
Immerse yourself in the heart of virtual reality using System 22’s 3D CG system, as suggested in its re-launch description. This game comes with four modes to explore: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Time Trial (T.T.), where you race against a rival car to set the fastest time. Moreover, it offers a DX version that supports H-shifter and clutch control for enhanced gaming experience.
