Captain Tsubasa is a Must Read for Sports Fans!
The main character of Captain Tsubasa is Tsubasa Oozora, a young boy who was rescued from a grave accident by clinging onto a soccer ball. His newfound passion for the sport leads him to dream of playing in the FIFA World Cup. Considering the ball as his companion, Tsubasa joins his school’s soccer team and participates in various tournaments. This popular manga series was published from 1981 to 1988, selling over 90 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful mangas during the 80s. The anime adaptation followed suit, airing for 128 episodes between 1983 and 1986. Subsequent anime films were produced, and in 1994, Yoichi Takahashi introduced a sequel manga titled World Youth.
Back in the ’90s and 2000s, I was thrilled to witness a barrage of Captain Tsubasa spin-offs and original animations hitting the screens! Fast forward to 2018, and my excitement knew no bounds as a new long-running anime series kicked off. Produced by the same brilliant minds behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, this remake was nothing short of spectacular!
The first season, spanning an astonishing 52 episodes, took us through the Elementary School Arc and Middle School Arc, leaving no stone unturned. Sadly, the second season, produced by Studio Kai, ran for just 39 episodes, but it did manage to cover the Junior Youth Arc – the final chapter from the original manga.
