Is G’iah the MCU’s Most Powerful Character We’ll Never See Again?

In the 2023 Disney+ series “Secret Invasion,” a character of immense power was introduced on screen, but it seems her initial appearance may be her final one. When discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) most formidable hero or villain, names like Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Arishem (David Kaye), and Dormammu often come up. However, the character G’iah from “Secret Invasion,” played by Emilia Clarke, outshines them all. A Skrull refugee and Talos’ daughter (Ben Mendelsohn), G’iah collaborates with Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and his resistance fighters in their scheme to conquer Earth. During the events of “Secret Invasion,” Talos successfully recruits G’iah for undercover work alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Following Talos’ demise, G’iah joins forces with other anti-resistance Skrulls to bring down Gravik.

Initially, G’iah bolsters herself with Extremis, the same substance that boosted Aldrich Killian’s powers in Iron Man 3, allowing her to endure Gravik’s initial attack on her life. Furthermore, she incorporates the Harvest, a repository of various Avengers’ DNA, to amplify her skills and replicate the mightiest heroes in the cosmos. In the climactic confrontation with Gravik, G’iah conjures the abilities of Captain Marvel, Ghost, Mantis, and Drax to vanquish her Skrull adversary who had also claimed the Harvest. Despite G’iah’s prowess often being overlooked by viewers, her debut in the MCU hinted at significant upheaval within the franchise. Regrettably, it appears that her journey has come to an end due to a single substantial factor.

The Future of Emilia Clarke’s G’iah in the MCU Is in Serious Doubt

As of now, it’s unclear if Clarke will continue in the MCU as G’iah, given the slim chances of her return. The lackluster response to “Secret Invasion” from both critics and Marvel Cinematic Universe fans might be the reason behind Marvel’s reluctance to develop a storyline involving any new characters introduced in the series. With a 53% approval rating among critics and 43% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, “Secret Invasion” is the lowest-rated live-action TV series within the MCU. The show draws inspiration from the Marvel Comics run of the same name, but the significant differences between the source material and the adaptation did not resonate well with fans.

The series “Secret Invasion” has faced significant backlash due to major plot flaws, including Maria Hill’s unexpected demise at the end of the premiere and the surprising reveal that Rhodey (Don Cheadle) was a Skrull in the MCU since “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016. Samuel L. Jackson gives an outstanding performance as Fury in his 12th appearance, while Clarke and Ben-Adir also deliver noteworthy performances. However, even these talented actors couldn’t compensate for the intricate plotlines and lack of importance in the larger MCU context of “Secret Invasion”. Consequently, due to the negative reception, it’s likely that Marvel will choose to disregard most of its storyline. In essence, while “Secret Invasion” failed to add anything significant to “The Marvels”, its role as a prelude has been accomplished.

It’s a Shame That G’iah’s MCU Tenure Was So Short-Lived

Secret Wars,” there’s a chance that G’iah could return and be utilized differently.
