In the latest Nintendo Direct event, Square Enix officially announced that the much-anticipated remake of Final Fantasy VII will hit the Switch 2 at some point. While this isn’t entirely unexpected given the publisher’s previous hints about new platforms for the trilogy, Xbox users have understandably felt a bit sidelined. However, there are whispers that an Xbox Series X|S version could be on the horizon as well. As per trusted insider Nate the Hate, it’s likely that Final Fantasy VII Remake will make its way to Xbox consoles this year, with a release date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tentatively set for 2026.
As a die-hard gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the chance to dive back into the world of Final Fantasy VII since its remake debuted on PlayStation 4 in 2020. Although it was initially exclusive to Sony platforms, the game eventually found its way onto PC. However, it’s been a different story with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which hit the PS5 in 2024 and PC earlier this year. It seems that Square Enix made an agreement with Sony to make these games timed exclusives on their platforms, but this move hasn’t been as successful as they might have hoped. Final Fantasy VII Remake saw impressive sales figures, but Rebirth didn’t quite meet expectations. Expanding the game’s reach to consoles like Nintendo and Xbox could significantly broaden its appeal and boost sales.
Just like unconfirmed news or leaks, it’s crucial to approach this information with a dose of skepticism until an official statement is made. However, considering Nate the Hate’s reputation for reliability, the chances of Xbox getting the Final Fantasy VII Remake seem more promising. While there have been Square Enix games that skipped Xbox and came out on Switch, Final Fantasy VII is a widely adored game, and it seems logical to release the first installment of the remake trilogy on as many platforms as feasible. Here’s hoping we get the confirmation soon!
Over the past few years, Microsoft has been actively cultivating a stronger bond with Square Enix. Historically, Square Enix has maintained a tighter relationship with Sony and Nintendo, but recently, more Square Enix games have become accessible on Xbox platforms. The long-awaited launch of Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox finally occurred in 2024, a goal that Phil Spencer had been pursuing for years personally. Last year also saw the release of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters on the system.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m eagerly waiting to catch wind of any news regarding the potential arrival of “Final Fantasy VII Remake” on Xbox platforms this year. If the rumors are true, we might hear something soon, possibly during a major event. But until then, it’s all speculation. So, for now, Xbox gamers like myself can only enjoy the original version of “Final Fantasy VII,” which is already available on our platform.
