Alan Tudyk is currently one of the busiest voice actors around, lending his talents to a wide range of characters. From portraying the Joker and Clayface in the mature animated series “Harley Quinn,” to voicing DC’s beloved superheroes such as The Flash (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold”), Green Arrow (“Young Justice”), and even Superman himself (“Justice League: War”), Tudyk has a knack for breathing life into these iconic figures. Recently, he joined James Gunn’s new DC Universe, where he voiced Dr. Phosphorus, Clayface, and Will Magnus in the animated “Creature Commandos.” Now, it’s been confirmed that Tudyk will also voice the robot “4” in the upcoming “Superman” film.
In the special previews shown during the weekend screening of A Minecraft Movie, I was among the group of Kryptonian robots who attended to the injured Superman (David Corenswet).
When Superdog, Krypto, pulls Superman into his Fortress of Solitude, a robot voiced by Tudyk informs Superman, “There’s no need for your thanks, sir, since we don’t feel gratitude. We’re merely machines, here to serve. We lack consciousness entirely.” (If you listen carefully, you might catch another familiar voice speaking what seems like the Kryptonian language as the robots attend to Kal-El in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.)
Apart from crafting the “next generation of robots” in Creature Commandos using the Nazi-slaying G.I. Robot, voiced by Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk has also lent his voice to several robotic characters across live-action and animation. These include K-2SO, a reprogrammed Imperial droid (in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Andor season 2), Optimus Prime, the Autobot leader (in Transformers: EarthSpark), and Cosmo, a lemon-headed robot sidekick (in The Electric State).
In a twist of roles, Sean Gunn, who reappeared as Weasel from the 2021’s “The Suicide Squad,” will now take on the human character Maxwell Lord in the DCU. Meanwhile, Nathan Fillion, known for his portrayal of T.D.K./The Detachable Kid in “The Suicide Squad,” will debut as Guy Gardner, the bowl-cut-sporting Green Lantern in “Superman.” Later, he’ll return in the “Lanterns” series on HBO, sharing screen time with Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart.
Similar to Gunn and Fillion, Tudyk often works with Gunn. Before his role in Creature Commandos, they collaborated on the 2009 production, James Gunn’s PG Porn. In addition, Gunn made an appearance on Tudyk’s Vimeo series, Con Man, which was produced by Fillion.
This upcoming movie, titled Superman, features David Corenswet portraying Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast will introduce several characters to the DC Universe, such as Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), the Guy Gardner Green Lantern (Fillion), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and The Authority’s Angela Spica/the Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría). Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell play Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, while Sara Sampaio and Terence Rosemore portray Luthor’s associates, Eve Teschmacher and Otis. Frank Grillo reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr., originally from the Creature Commandos. The movie is scheduled to release on July 11.
