Approximately a year since Arkane Austin ceased operations, Raphaël Colantonio – founder of Arkane Studios – has expressed interest in developing a fresh installment within the Dishonored series. Yet, he cautions that fans might not want to anticipate this potential sequel too eagerly, as its realization may take some time.
According to an interview on Quad Damage Podcast, as reported by RockPaperShotgun, Colantonio showed no immediate interest in creating another game for the Prey series. However, he appeared open to the idea of developing a potential third installment in the Dishonored franchise.
Colantonio responded with a smile, ‘I’d be quite intrigued by the notion.’ In essence, he was merely brainstorming, but considering the gap since the last game, he mused, ‘Perhaps it’s about time we revisit Dishonored 3, don’t you think?’
It’s been shared that several Arkane developers, including Deathloop director Dinga Bkaba and Dishonored creator Harvey Smith, have personal concepts for a new Dishonored game. However, as these ideas are still in the ideation phase and haven’t been formally proposed yet, Colantonio feels it might be premature to discuss a potential Dishonored 3 at this time.
Colantonio added, “It wouldn’t be logical to discuss it now. We’ve essentially ventured into the realm of science fiction given the current situation. Most of the people involved in the series are no longer together, and Harvey is no longer with Arkane. I’m not at Arkane either, and Dinga is focusing on Blade.
The initial release of the game “Dishonored” in 2013, on platforms including PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, significantly boosted Arkane’s reputation. Prior to this, the studio was known for creating lesser-known titles such as “Arx Fatalis” and “Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.” The unique blend of a dark visual aesthetic reminiscent of “Half-Life 2,” stealth gameplay similar to the “Thief” series, and supernatural abilities found in games like “System Shock 2” made “Dishonored” a success.
Following it, the game Dishonored 2, too, received critical acclaim. Notably, it was commended for the vast array of powers players could acquire and the complex level layouts, which haven’t been matched by other games since that time.
Arkane Lyon, creators of Deathloop, are presently developing Marvel’s Blade, but its release date is not imminent. Initial reports from late last year suggest that a launch as early as 2027 might be possible.
Instead of Arkane Austin, another studio that shut down last year under Microsoft was Arkane Austin. Alongside it were Tango Gameworks, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog Studios. Bikaba had previously described the closure of these studios as “extremely unfortunate,” and he criticized the company executives for creating work environments akin to “Darwinian jungles.
