Fans of the TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale” in the United States have been waiting eagerly, but their wait ends soon as they can immerse themselves in the sixth and final season starting on April 8th, a Tuesday.
Unfortunately, my friends in the United Kingdom, there’s a slight delay ahead (don’t worry, it won’t be for long), but trust me, it’ll prove to be worth the patience.
Showrunner Yahlin Chang shared with TV Insider that this is a time when the personalities within Gilead, including its residents, particularly the women, have reached their breaking point.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can rephrase that statement as follows: “I rise, determined to say ‘no more’. I’ve endured pain, faced adversity, but somehow, I dig deep within myself to confront the antagonist head-on and stand my ground.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel the tension building. It seems like they’re being driven to their breaking point, and it won’t be long before they stand up and fight back. The underlying theme here is clear: it’s about standing up against the status quo, about rebellion. And finally, after what feels like an eternity, we witness a full-scale uprising.
In another compelling performance, Elizabeth Moss takes center stage as June, joined by Yvonne Strahovski portraying Serena, Bradley Whitford in the role of Commander Lawrence, Max Minghella as Nick, and Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, alongside other notable cast members.

Elisabeth Moss plays June
June is the central character in The Handmaid’s Tale, and the narrative largely unfolds from her perspective. Prior to the establishment of Gilead, an authoritarian theocracy which seized power over the United States, she went by another name – she was a book editor, mother, and wife.
By the close of season 4, June took the life of Commander Fred Waterford, managed an escape from Gilead, and found freedom in Canada. However, instead of settling for a tranquil existence, she remains steadfastly committed to dismantling the oppressive regime that had once held her captive.
Previously, we found her boarding a train bound for Alaska, originating from Canada, where there are signs of growing intolerance towards refugees.

Yvonne Strahovski plays Serena Joy
What is the background or identity of Serena Joy? She was the spouse of the late Commander Fred Waterford, a man who forced June, a handmaid, into a sexual relationship as part of their efforts to reproduce within the dystopian society of Gilead.
Prior to the establishment of the Republic, she was a televangelist who delivered sermons on-screen with an aim to encourage women to revert to their traditional domestic roles. Although she played a significant role in the formation of Gilead at its inception, she later found herself excluded from the government and oppressed by the very society she contributed to building – a situation that has left her deeply unhappy. In fact, she even participated in helping June’s daughter, Nichole, escape from Gilead at the end of season 2.
Initially appearing as someone who might secretly aid the struggle against Gilead during season 3, Serena eventually came to regret helping Nichole escape and started working against June instead.
In the fifth season, Serena welcomed her very own son, named Noah, into the world. In the final episode, they found themselves on the same train journeying from Canada to Alaska.

Bradley Whitford plays Commander Lawrence
What is Commander Lawrence known as? He holds a significant position within Gilead and is responsible for building its structure. However, despite his crucial part in establishing it, he has joined forces with June on several instances to challenge the system he himself constructed.
Have I encountered Bradley Whitford in a different show or movie before? He is most recognized for his role in The West Wing, but he has also acted in Get Out, Transparent, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Saving Mr. Banks, Trophy Wife, and The Good Guys.
Max Minghella plays Nick
Who is Nick? Nick is a character who was initially presented as an Eye, serving as both The Commander’s chauffeur and that of Serena Joy in season 1. Following Serena Joy’s suggestion for him to engage in a sexual relationship with June to boost her chances of getting pregnant, they began a clandestine romance. Nick is the father of June’s child, named Nichole, and there remains an ongoing romantic tension between them.

O-T Fagbenle plays Luke
In a time before the establishment of Gilead as a republic, Luke was known as the spouse of June and the father of their child, Hannah.
Initially, Luke was wedded to another woman, whom he later divorced. However, under the new theocratic rule, divorce wasn’t recognized, causing complications for Luke and June. As they attempted to cross the border into Canada, they were apprehended, but Luke successfully evaded capture and now lives as a refugee in Canada.
By the conclusion of season 4, June successfully fled to Canada where she reconnected with Luke. However, the emotional distance and turmoil they’ve experienced, along with the complications brought about by Nick, have cast a cloud of uncertainty over their relationship.
In the last season, Luke was arrested after he killed a man who tried to attack June.

Madeline Brewer plays Janine
Who is Janine? She is a handmaid who bore a daughter, only to have the child taken from her and given to Commander Putnam and his wife. In the most recent season, she was assigned to live with Commander Lawrence, but was later seized by the Eyes due to her disobedience. Aunt Lydia has always harbored a tender feelings towards Janine, yet she is not hesitant to correct any misbehavior on her part.

Amanda Brugel as Rita
