After being in development for quite some time, it’s now official that a director will be leading the forthcoming “Death Stranding” movie. Back in late 2022, renowned video game creator Hideo Kojima disclosed his plans to create a cinematic version of his 2019 game, “Death Stranding.” A24 was announced as the studio involved with the project in 2023. Since then, there haven’t been many updates about the movie, leaving some fans questioning its progress. However, recent news indicates that the project has made significant strides as a well-known director is now set to direct the film.
According to Deadline, Michael Sarnoski is gearing up to pen and direct the movie “Death Stranding”. At the moment, Sarnoski is in the post-production stage for his upcoming film “Death of Robin Hood”, which means he’s already thinking about what comes next. Once he finishes work on “Death of Robin Hood”, he plans to collaborate with A24 once more on the project titled “Death Stranding”.
In essence, Sarnoski may not have a long list of film credits, but the ones he does have are notable. His breakthrough came in 2021 with the movie “Pig,” featuring Nicolas Cage. His latest work is “A Quiet Place: Day One,” released in 2024 to widespread praise. Given his background in creating darker and horror-oriented films, it’s understandable why he was chosen for directing “Death Stranding.
Regarding Kojima’s role in the Death Stranding movie, it’s clear that the esteemed director has expressed his intention to contribute to the project. However, his schedule is quite packed at the moment. He’s currently working on a follow-up to Death Stranding, a new horror game titled OD with Xbox, and a successor to the Metal Gear Solid series named Physint. It’s unclear how he’ll manage all these projects along with assisting in the Death Stranding movie production.
At the moment, we don’t know when “Death Stranding” will be released, as there isn’t even a general timeframe yet. However, fans can look forward to playing “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” on their PS5 consoles much sooner, specifically on June 26th.
