Currently, it’s a prosperous era for Star Wars TV series, and Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind Andor, acknowledges The Mandalorian as the catalyst for this boom. In an interview with Empire, Gilroy highlighted how The Mandalorian demonstrated that a Star Wars story could thrive in a one-hour series format. He also expressed gratitude towards Jon Favreau and his team for paving the way with The Mandalorian’s continued success, which effectively silenced skeptics about other shows within the franchise. With Andor gearing up for its climactic second and final season on April 22nd, Gilroy remains thankful for the solid foundation laid by The Mandalorian team that other shows could expand upon.
Gilroy stated that they were safeguarded at every stage, referring to protection against cancellation, creative concessions, and support from various sources. Kennedy, Lucasfilm, Iger, the audience, and even The Mandalorian itself ensured our success. He explained that many people had their backs as we moved forward.
He remarked that the popularity of ‘The Mandalorian’ provided us with a launching point. Essentially, their success was what ignited the entire project. You can bet your last credit that without Baby Yoda, there would be no ‘Andor’. This is something he felt it necessary to emphasize, given some misconceptions in fan discussions about potential tensions between him and other creative minds at Lucasfilm, like Favreau and Dave Filoni.
In the digital world, there’s always an attempt to create divisions among us, as well as Favreau and Filoni, he pointed out. It’s disheartening to hear some of the comments; they can be quite harsh. But the reality is, we wouldn’t have a show without them. They’ve been instrumental in providing us with the strength to move forward.
Gilroy stated that he feels confidently that a series similar to Andor, with its immense creative liberty, “will not be repeated. This isn’t due to our exceptional abilities, but rather because no one is likely to initiate a production on such an extensive scale again, film it practically, and possess the resources and security to accomplish something as ambitious as this.
Gilroy served as a screenwriter on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” more than a decade ago. He re-joined the team in 2018 when “Andor” was being developed, contributing as both a writer and advisor during its early stages. His role eventually expanded to that of showrunner by the time the series began production. At one point, Gilroy had outlined a five-season plan for the show; however, he later agreed that it would be more beneficial to focus on an extended second season with a dramatic conclusion.
Beginning April 22nd, Andor’s second season will commence on Disney+, releasing three episodes initially. Subsequently, an additional three episodes will be added weekly for four consecutive weeks. Essentially, this equates to a feature-length runtime episode per week for a whole month straight. Currently, Season 1 is available for streaming on Disney+, along with Rogue One and the rest of the Star Wars saga.
