The Goonies Stars Debunk Long-Running Legend About Film, “Offended” by Idea

The Goonies never fib! Jeff Cohen’s character Chunk was famous for spinning yarns (such as his tales of rescuing old folks from a nursing home fire or inviting Michael Jackson over for a bathroom visit), but there’s one story that Chunk didn’t have a hand in. For years, it has been claimed that director Richard Donner kept the young cast of The Goonies, which included Sean Astin as Mikey, Corey Feldman as Mouth, Ke Huy Quan as Data, Martha Plimpton as Stef, Kerri Green as Andy, and Josh Brolin as Brand, from seeing One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship, the Inferno, before filming the legendary cave scene to capture their authentic responses.

At Awesome Con in Washington D.C., Astin teamed up with his co-stars from The Goonies, including Feldman, Green, Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, and Robert Davi, for a panel titled “Hey You Guys! The Goonsey Reunion“. During this gathering, Astin clarified a widely spread rumor that the child actors did not see the pirate ship for the first time while shooting the film.

In a surprising turn of events, Plimpto admitted that she hadn’t laid eyes on the massive 105-foot vessel prior to filming. She assured everyone, “My response was genuine.” Later, Pantoliano, portraying Francis, the beloved son of the Fratelli family, inquired about the number of takes for Plimpto’s reaction. To this, she replied, “Just one. That was all they required, dear.

Originating from where did the rumor about The Goonies stem? It appears to have roots that reach back to 2001, as the Goonies cast reunited with Donner for an audio commentary on the initial DVD launch.

In order to obtain genuine responses from the cast, it was decided not to reveal the pirate ship until filming day. However, Feldman confessed to occasionally peeking at it while exploring the set. Furthermore, it’s been reported that several young actors cursed upon seeing the pirate ship, prompting a reshoot of the scene. Brolin was among those who used a strong profanity, reportedly dropping an “F-bomb.

Afterward, the tale found its place in online Goonies trivia, appearing not just on the film’s IMDb trivia section but also in various lists titled “10 Facts You Never Knew About The Goonies.
