Stranger Things Star Finn Wolfhard Wishes He Started Therapy When Show Began

Stranger Things propelled its young cast members into widespread recognition, and Finn Wolfhard admits that dealing with such sudden fame can be challenging. In a recent interview with PEOPLE , the actor, who portrays Mike Wheeler in the series, discussed his journey growing up amidst the global phenomenon. Reflecting on his experience, Wolfhard expressed that if he could change one thing, it would be to prioritize his mental health from the start. He acknowledges that this would require insight and careful planning, but he now feels it would have been beneficial to begin therapy as the show gained popularity. Despite this, he admits that it’s a complex issue that requires thoughtful consideration.

He expressed that while he wouldn’t change anything in his past, he might revisit the moment when the show initially gained popularity. Instead of living through the experience again, he would seek therapy at that time. However, due to the sudden and chaotic nature of the event, there wasn’t much opportunity for reflection.

As a budding movie critic, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey of Millie Bobby Wolfhard, who was merely 13 when “Stranger Things” premiered in 2016, now standing tall at 22 as we brace for the final season. Prior to this breakout role, she had modest roles as a child actress on shows like “The 100” and “Supernatural.”

In a candid moment, Wolfhard shared that he views mistakes as an inevitable part of growing up for everyone, and he doesn’t let his own blunders weigh heavily on his shoulders. This perspective serves as a reminder that growth and learning often stem from our missteps, shaping us into the individuals we become.

He noted, “I’d likely mess up in a different manner regardless, but that’s just part of the learning process.” In essence, he believes that “childhood and life are all about experimenting and figuring things out through trial and error.

As a movie enthusiast reflecting on my personal journey, I’ve shared before how the whirlwind of teenage fame brought about anxiety and panic attacks, experiences that became all too familiar as my star rose. In an interview with GQ in 2023, I admitted to a self-imposed veil over my struggles – a byproduct of the industry I’m part of. The necessity to emote on cue for the camera often meant suppressing my true feelings. This internal juggling act eventually took its toll on me as an actor.

Wolfhard’s contemporaries in the cast share similar openness about their celebrity experiences, such as Millie Bobby Brown who recently confided in Vanity Fair that she faces friendship challenges due to her fame. She stated, “I don’t have many friends because of who I am… I didn’t go to school, so I don’t have the best social skills with people my own age and friendships. I struggle with that quite a bit. I missed out on a few things. But I’m working through them.

In no time, the young actors from Stranger Things can move past that particular chapter, as season 5 of the series is anticipated to debut on Netflix later this year, with the earlier seasons currently available for streaming.
