Rumors about a simultaneous announcement and release of a PS5 remake for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in April 2025 persist, fueling speculation with whispers of a “shadow drop” – a surprise launch without prior notice.
On his regular gaming news podcast, Giant Bomb member Jeff Grubb (through VGC) fueled speculation that the game might be unveiled “as soon as this month” and could be released “very shortly”, a term known as a shadow drop which refers to announcing and releasing a game simultaneously. This means that if the RPG remake follows this pattern, it would debut on PS5 the same day it is announced.
Over the last few weeks, there’s been a flood of talk about a possible remake of Oblivion, and now some of those rumors have been proven false because they claimed it would be released last week by sources that aren’t always trusted.
It appears that event didn’t occur, but since historical precedent shows that old media trailers get taken down from the game’s original Steam listing prior to other remake announcements, it strongly hints at some exciting news on the horizon.
Beyond simply updating its visuals, earlier reports suggest that the remake of Oblivion will significantly improve gameplay mechanics such as stealth, defense, and archery. Oblivion marked the beginning of the series’ most significant achievement yet, Skyrim. Despite being preceded by it, Oblivion was equally groundbreaking in its time, debuting initially on Xbox 360, followed by a release on PS3 a year later.
