In a moment of overconfidence, Sony’s PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi suggested that people might need to extend their work hours in order to afford a PS3.
The system, which launched at $599, was considered extortionately expensive at the time.
Initially, the company faced a stern lesson from the market, and it has subsequently committed several errors such as launching the PS5 Pro at an elevated price of $699. However, it appears to have toned down its overtly confident demeanor in public forums.
Before the launch of the Xbox One, former Xbox boss Don Mattrick was questioned about the console’s mandatory online connection feature. This was a time when he had already assumed responsibility for it.
Luckily, there’s an option for folks struggling with connectivity, and it goes by the name – Xbox 360. I’m thrilled about that!
And now it seems it’s Nintendo’s turn to completely lose touch with reality.
Doug Bowser, the president of Nintendo of America, acknowledged that some individuals might find the price of the Switch 2 beyond their budget.
We aimed to extend our gaming universe to other Nintendo Switch platforms because we wanted more individuals to experience these characters and worlds. By doing so, they can appreciate the worth of our games, regardless of which version of the console they choose.
If Nintendo were to lower the cost of the initial Switch console and provide a range of budget-friendly first-party games for the system, it would make things ideal.
As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that despite Bowser’s claims about the affordability of the current console, I’m not fully convinced. The hardware prices remain unchanged, and games like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” are still priced at $60. It seems to me that the financial aspect might not make it an easily affordable alternative for many gamers, at least not yet.
It would appear that all gaming hardware manufacturers require a reality check from time to time.
