Shetland favourite Douglas Henshall cast in period drama film Angh

Former Shetland star Douglas Henshall has landed a new movie role in upcoming film Angh.

As I excitedly share with you all, I’ve been tapped to bring a key character to life in an upcoming period drama. This captivating tale unfolds against the backdrop of 1960s Nagaland, a region in eastern India, marking the feature directorial debut of renowned short filmmaker Theja Rio.

The movie appears to tell the story of a Konyak tribal leader who faces a difficult decision – either prioritizing survival or adhering to his ancient customs, as the arrival of an American missionary potentially endangers his community’s cultural identity.

Henshall will perform alongside a primarily debuting local cast from Nagaland, marking a significant achievement for the region’s film industry. This production is being touted as a major milestone for Naga cinema.

Rio expressed great enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We can’t wait to breathe life into this tale. The rich history, unique culture, and hidden tales of Nagaland offer tremendous possibilities for cinema, and this movie serves as our means to share these treasures globally.

Working with a 16mm camera, partnering with native performers, and including Douglas Henshall in our adventure gives this production a unique charm. We’re confident that it will enrich the cinematic panorama significantly.

Douglas Henshall became exceptionally well-known for playing Detective Inspector Jimmy Pérez during the initial seven seasons of the BBC’s crime series, Shetland. However, he decided to leave the program in the year 2022.

After that, he has featured in the BBC adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder Is Easy, the Netflix series Who Is Erin Carter?, and the Nordic noir The Darkness. However, he was replaced as the lead in Shetland by Ashley Jensen, who introduced a new character DI Ruth Calder.

He expressed that he felt at ease bidding farewell to him, however, he anticipates things might feel a bit unusual for some time. Yet, he believes he’s extremely content wherever he currently resides.

In transitioning to new positions, he remarked: “It’s refreshing to try out various tasks. And it’s a bit of relief not to portray the most virtuous man on earth for a short while.
