Shin Universe Creator Has Bad News For Godzilla Fans

In my observation, Hideaki Anno found himself grappling with a bold and gritty concept when he introduced the Shin Universe, breathing fresh, ominous life into iconic Japanese figures such as Godzilla, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman. The trilogy of live-action movies left kaiju enthusiasts questioning if this darker realm had a promising future ahead. Since the debut of Shin Kamen Rider, there’s been no sign that this live-action universe will be gracing the big screen once more, and Anno has some disappointing news on this front. In a recent interview, the mastermind behind Neon Genesis Evangelion revealed that his days in the realm of live-action filmmaking might be drawing to a close.

In a recent conversation with Shukan Bunshun, a Japanese media outlet, Anno dismissed rumors that he would be developing new, unconventional live-action films. This could disappoint fans who were hoping for sequels or a massive crossover featuring characters like Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Shin Kamen Rider. Moreover, Anno has not only been involved in the Shin Universe but also other unique live-action productions, such as the 2000 psychological drama “Ritual.” Although different from the realms of kaiju and NERV, this film is equally experimental compared to Hideaki’s other projects, if not more so.

Shin Might Be Done

The latest installment in the “Shin Japan Heroes Universe,” titled Shin Kamen Rider, introduced a more violent and gritty portrayal of superheroics than previously seen. Released in 2023, this film has left fans curious about its sequel. Despite no official crossover announcement for the big screen, characters from the franchise have crossed paths in other ways. Notably, merchandise featuring collaborations between Kamen Rider, Godzilla, Ultraman, and even Evangelion mechs have been released. A standout piece of merchandise showcases these characters merging to create a unique character for tackling potential threats.

In Universal Studios Japan, the realm of Shin expanded to such an extent that it gained attention all on its own. More specifically, the thrilling 4-D experience titled “Godzilla Vs. Evangelion: The Real” wasn’t just a meeting point for these two realms; it also birthed a fresh kaiju character. This exciting theme park ride unveiled Shin King Ghidorah as part of its lineup, and much like Godzilla, this three-headed dragon received a menacing new transformation.

Anno’s Big New Project

If you’re interested in delving into the creations of Hideaki Anno, there’s an exciting fresh endeavor that awaits! The series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” has arrived and offers a unique twist. This time, it delves into an alternate reality where the original anime series, which spawned the franchise, concludes with a different outcome. In this new universe by Anno, instead of the Earth Federation emerging victorious as in the original, the Principality of Zeon wins, leading to a distinctly different tale for “Gundam” compared to what we’ve previously experienced.
