During the latest presentation for Nintendo Switch 2, GameChat was given a notable portion of the spotlight, indicating it could be Nintendo’s equivalent to Discord on their system. From a hardware standpoint, there’s even a dedicated C button specifically for this feature. Initially, GameChat will be available at no cost when the Switch 2 is released; however, this free period won’t last forever.
The Direct show has confirmed that the free period for using this service concludes on March 31st, 2026. Afterward, it requires a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscription to continue its use. As mentioned by Bill Trinen, VP of player and product experience at Nintendo of America, during an interview with Polygon, you can learn about the NSO subscription there and understand some of its features. If you’re not subscribed, the C button won’t serve much purpose.
Concerning pricing for using GameChat, Trinen stated it’s an essential aspect of the overall platform experience, further mentioning that Nintendo Switch Online plays a crucial role in the upcoming Switch 2 experience. To date, Nintendo has verified that Expansion Pack subscribers will receive upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2, along with GameCube Classics.
The anticipated release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set for June 5th, priced at $449.99. However, due to recent import taxes, pre-orders in the U.S. have been postponed.
