Enthusiasts of the Transformers franchise who have been yearning to revisit the original 1980s comics will soon get that chance. Alongside numerous animated series adaptations, the Transformers have also graced the pages of several successful comic book series, such as those published in both the U.S. and the U.K. Hasbro and Skybound are collaborating on a new series of Transformers comics at Image Comics, and they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign for the The Transformers Compendium Set, which gathers all the U.S. and U.K. stories from the original 1980s The Transformers run in comprehensive hardcover editions.
The “Transformers” Encyclopedia Collection is bound in imitation leather, and each collection ranges from 1,000 to 1,200 pages. This campaign is now active on Kickstarter at transformerskickstarter.com, where you won’t find the hardcover versions anywhere else. If you’re intrigued by the campaign, this could be your chance to support it. Currently, more than $1 million has been pledged, and it was fully funded in just two minutes with assistance from over 2,000 supporters. There’s even a brief trailer for the Kickstarter, which you can watch using the player above.
According to Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound, this campaign is a tribute to the rich history of Transformers. It offers two distinct reading experiences, ensuring there’s an option for every level of Transformers enthusiast, whether you’re a casual fan or a die-hard one.
Readers have access to eight books altogether, among which are two U.S. and two U.K. collection sets, as well as the special “The Transformers: Til All Are One” Box Set that combines U.S. and U.K. stories into a unified and complete reading journey. This version comes with four hardcover books in a collector’s box, adorned with new artwork from current Transformers series cover artist Daniel Warren Johnson.
Supporters who back the campaign for “The Transformers: Til All Are One” Box Set have the option to select either Autobot or Decepticon editions, or opt for both if they wish. The fundraiser also offers pledge tiers that include autographed items by Simon Furman, a renowned Transformers comic book writer who has significantly shaped these tales, and Bob Budiansky, the founder of the Transformers universe, who is responsible for naming, developing personalities, and creating stories for many of its legendary characters.
The perks for this campaign include retro tech specifications cards from the 1980s, a coin with both Autobot and Decepticon shield insignias, badges, exclusive comics, and more stretch goals to be unlocked as the campaign advances. Backers of previous Skybound campaigns and those on our mailing list will receive a complimentary Jetfire tech spec card upon backing this new campaign.
2023 saw Skybound as the new residence for both Transformers and G.I. Joe comics, with the publisher merging these iconic franchises within their Energon Universe. The inaugural comic in this universe was “Void Rivals,” penned by Robert Kirkman (known for Invincible and The Walking Dead) and illustrated by Lorenzo De Felici (Oblivion Song). Additional titles feature Transformers, written by Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Do a Powerbomb) with artwork from Jorge Corona (Middlewest), as well as G.I. Joe, penned by Joshua Williamson (DC’s Superman, Dark Ride) and illustrated by Tom Reilly (The Thing).
