The October Girl: Book One
Storyline: Autumn Ackerman, a woman raised with a love for magic, fairies, and heroic princesses fighting dragons, now finds herself stuck in the mundane routine of working at her local coffee shop. However, this ordinary life is turned upside down when she encounters Barnaby, a character from her childhood imagination. This meeting leads her to the realm of the Night Folk, an entirely new world that promises excitement beyond her wildest dreams.
Autumn learns that her world isn’t as ordinary as she thought, as it’s filled with mystical beings resembling ancient legends of deities and beasts. She uncovers this truth, but must navigate her past connections to these Night Folk while dodging the lethal Mr. Balloon. Fortunately, Barnaby and a fresh companion named Evan Fade will assist her in this journey.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve carried this story of “The October Girl” in my heart for over three decades. It’s been a dream of mine to bring it to life, and thanks to the collaboration between Mad Cave/Maverick, that dream is now becoming reality.
For years, I’ve been sketching characters in tights engaged in battles, which has been an exciting journey. However, my imagination was overflowing with people in long coats, haunting skeleton trees, and peculiar little creatures. There simply wasn’t a platform to share the kind of stories I yearned to tell. But now, with the expanding interest in comics beyond tights and capes, I can finally release all these creative bursts from my mind.
According to Smith, the key aspect of this book lies in evoking the sensation of youth, where the future seems vast and unknown, the world yet to be fully explored, and curiosity about whether there’s more to life than meets the eye. Being a lifelong reader and dreamer, Smith often yearns for a world as enchanting and full of mystery as the ones depicted in books. This book poses the intriguing question, ‘What if it really was?’
The book’s editor, Christina Harrington, described “The October Girl” as a contemporary twist on classic fairy tales, stirring the dream that we all harbored at some point of being hidden witches or princesses. She explained that our protagonist, Autumn, discovers her magical ancestry, yet this discovery appears to only bring complications rather than benefits. The book is expected to capture the hearts of young adult readers across age groups who enjoy tales of a determined underdog navigating a world remarkably similar to ours…yet subtly cloaked in a layer of magic and danger.
The first book of “The October Girl” series is set to hit the shelves on October 21st, with a detailed summary provided further down.
As a child, Autumn Ackerman nurtured dreams of fairies, magic, and brave princesses vanquishing dragons. However, at eighteen, her life seems confined to serving customers behind the counter of her small-town coffee shop, causing her to question if this is all there is for her. But one fateful night in the alley behind the shop, she encounters Barnaby, her old imaginary friend, who upends Autumn’s reality completely.
Delving into the enigmatic and eerie realm of the Night Creatures, beings whose legends birthed all human tales of gods and beasts, Autumn is on the verge of uncovering a reality beyond her childhood dreams, a reality that proves to be much more treacherous than she ever fathomed. Guided by Barnaby and Evan Fade, the melancholic adolescent who inherited the town’s bookstore, Autumn must evade the chilling menace of Mr. Balloon for long enough to unravel the secrets of the Night Creatures and her own past.
