In the latest episode of “Daredevil: Born Again,” the roles of predator and prey become blurred as Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) seeks to uncover the truth about his friend Foggy Nelson’s murder. While it initially appeared that Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter/Bullseye (portrayed by Wilson Bethel) executed Foggy outside of Josie’s Bar as a means of settling old scores with the law firm Nelson, Murdock & Page, Matt harbors a growing suspicion that someone else orchestrated Foggy’s death.
1 Year ago, Dex was found guilty of 11 counts of first-degree murder and given a life sentence without parole for his violent attack at Josie’s. However, when Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) moves Dex from protective custody into general population at Ryker’s Island – what retired cop Cherry calls a “death sentence” – Matt suspects that the alleged ex-crime kingpin is settling old scores.
At Josie’s, the bar named after its proprietor (Susan Varon), the bartender pours Matt a drink of O’Melveny’s – a round that Foggy, unfortunately, didn’t get to complete. As Matt takes his drink, he suddenly understands something: “He realized he was going to win, and someone stopped him from doing so.” Foggy was about to toast with O’Melveny’s when he received a call from his client, “Dumb Benny” Cafaro, who had been caught on camera stealing 20 cases of high-priced wine from a warehouse in New York’s Red Hook pier.
In the interim, Mayor Fisk confides in his wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) that he’s successfully obtained both public and private financing for their Red Hook Port project, which has been a significant focus of her activities throughout the series. He acknowledges Vanessa’s role in managing their affairs with New York’s Five Families during his recent absence (between ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Echo’), specifically mentioning how she took care of matters such as getting rid of Luca (Patrick Murney) and ending her relationship with Adam (Lou Taylor Pucci).
As the date of my girlfriend, Dr. Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), and Fisk’s therapist, I gracefully don a tuxedo and accompany her to the Black and White Ball supporting the Red Hook Port project – all while harboring an undercurrent of tension with Fisk. However, as I utilize my heightened senses to secretly listen in on their conversations, the truth unfolds: Vanessa Fisk, the First Lady of New York, orchestrated the death of my friend, Foggy.
Matt acknowledges that it was Vanessa who took control of the Fisk crime empire while her husband was absent, and he’s certain she orchestrated Bullseye’s attack on Foggy. In a direct confrontation, Matt expresses, “Yes, I believe it was you. What I can’t figure out is why.
Prior to Matt finding an answer for his query – “Why?”, he detects the rhythmic clicks of a sniper’s weapon. Dexter, having escaped confinement, is positioned on a balcony overlooking the ballroom, with Mayor Fisk lined up in his sights. As Dexter prepares to shoot, Matt shifts Fisk aside at the last moment, and the scene concludes with Matt losing a substantial amount of blood from a bullet wound in his shoulder.
Did Foggy die in the comics?
The Netflix series “Daredevil: Born Again” primarily draws inspiration from the comic book runs written by Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky, featuring characters like Mayor Fisk, Muse, and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. There are also similarities to Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark’s 2006 comic run, specifically in “The Devil in Cell-Block D” where Matt Murdock was imprisoned at Ryker’s prior to his trial, following the exposure of his secret identity as Daredevil by a tabloid newspaper.
In issue #82 of Daredevil, it appeared that Foggy, Matt’s closest friend who had become a defense attorney, was brutally murdered by inmates at Ryker’s. The panel suggested that Wilson Fisk (also known as Kingpin) orchestrated the crime since he was imprisoned there at the time, but further investigation using his superhuman senses revealed that Fisk was actually innocent of the crime. In the storyline “Born Again,” Matt heard Foggy’s weak heartbeat before he passed away and during a meeting with the mayor, Matt overheard Fisk denying any involvement in the murder.
Who killed Foggy in the comics?
It became clear that Foggy didn’t perish after being stabbed in Ryker’s. Instead, he was resuscitated in an ambulance and secretly taken away by the FBI. They placed him under witness protection, using the alias “Everett Williams,” to shield him from the mob. Matt managed to break out of prison and subsequently discovered that his close friend had been murdered, not realizing that Foggy was still alive.
2006’s “Daredevil” issue #92 unveiled the enigmatic puppeteer as none other than Vanessa Fisk, the wife of the Kingpin. In a heartfelt confession to Matt Murdock, she revealed her impending death and her belief that her inexplicable terminal illness was her punishment for taking the life of their son, Richard Fisk. You see, Richard had betrayed our family, setting up an attempt on the Kingpin’s life during a coup.
Instead of placing the blame on Daredevil and Kingpin for the destruction of their family’s peace, a vengeful Vanessa secretly orchestrated events following Matt’s arrest by the FBI. She proposed using her husband’s influential connections and damaging evidence to make his public exposure and federal charges disappear, in exchange for helping Fisk escape prison. However, Matt refused to be manipulated as a piece in Vanessa’s deceitful scheme.
In the end, Vanessa cleared Matt of all charges when she released proof showing that he had been wrongly accused in a complex scheme orchestrated by the FBI. Later on, Matt discovered that Vanessa had faked the death of her friend Foggy, as he heard the latter’s heart still beating.
The Daredevil: Born Again season 1 finale airs Tuesday, April 15 on Disney+.
