For over six decades, Doctor Who has been a consistent presence on TV screens, and the upcoming season brings a significant milestone to the show. For the very first time, the leads of the series will not be white actors.
In the role of the Doctor alongside Ncuti Gatwa will be Varada Sethu, portraying the character Belinda Chandra. Together, they’ll navigate through perilous situations across different eras and dimensions, as an enigmatic entity strives to thwart Belinda’s homecoming to Earth.
In other words, Gatwa suggested, it’s about advancement or development, considering the societies we belong to.
It’s amazing what media can accomplish, and it’s demonstrating this capability. However, it’s equally thrilling to envision a future where featuring non-white leads won’t be such a significant milestone.
Sethu agreed with her fellow actor, expressing, “When there’s no need for discussion on the topic – and each action that brings us one step nearer to that day I find truly wonderful.

At a Q&A session after the season premiere showing of The Robot Revolution, Russell T Davies, the showrunner for Doctor Who, implied that the diverse representations you see on screen aren’t something they deliberately plan – instead, it’s just a reflection of the diverse world we inhabit in our everyday lives.
He remarked, “It’s as simple as taking a breath – that’s just living,” emphasizing its commonplace nature. Equivalent to stepping outside your front door, it’s ordinary yet significant, the opening of that door revealing the world around us. However, when you find yourself on television after doing so…that’s extraordinary!
“You feel visible, you feel seen. And that’s a better day. That’s a wonderful thing to do.”
In the upcoming season of Doctor Who, Millie Gibson, who previously appeared as Ruby Sunday, is set to rejoin Gatwa and Sethu. However, the extent of her involvement in future episodes has yet to be determined.
Beginning this coming Saturday, April 12th, Doctor Who will air every weekend at 6:50 PM on BBC One within the United Kingdom. For those who reside in the UK, fresh episodes will be accessible from 8 AM on Saturdays via BBC iPlayer. On a global scale, except for within the UK, this series will be available on Disney+.
