Fortunately, studio founder and CEO Mark Cooke took time out to address some questions about the upcoming strategic card game.
Apart from introducing fresh adversaries and game modes, what unique elements or enhancements can we expect in Monster Train 2 that surpass its earlier version?
As a seasoned gamer diving into Monster Train 2 (MT2), I’m thrilled about enhancing every nook and cranny of the original game. Not only does it introduce five fresh clans, each offering unique mechanics and strategic layers, but it also unveils customizable Pyre Hearts. These hearts fuel your train and are crucial for survival throughout a run. In MT2, there’s an impressive collection of over 10 diverse Pyre Hearts to discover, each boasting distinct stats and gameplay quirks that add strategic complexity to my runs.

What are some examples of how the new card types will interact with each other?
Equipment and Room cards. Equipment cards are instantly attached to your characters, boosting them with diverse skills. On the other hand, Room cards improve a specific area within the train during the ongoing battle. It’s important to note that multiple Equipment and Room cards can be active at the same time as they impact different aspects of the game – characters and rooms. However, only one Equipment card can be assigned to a character and only one Room card can be placed in a room at any given time.
As an ardent enthusiast, I’m curious to know more about the workings of Endless Mode in Monster Train 2. Could you enlighten me on how the difficulty progression is designed in this mode? How will it scale over time to keep the challenge engaging and exciting?
In Endless Mode, players are offered an extra treat after their main gameplay (runs). If they succeed in the run, they gain access to a continuous sequence of battles, giving them a chance to explore the limits of their deck. The difficulty level of enemies starts at a similar level as the end of a run and gradually increases as progress is made. After each battle, players choose a beneficial and detrimental bonus to keep things engaging. We record your top Endless Mode statistics in our Logbook, encouraging you to beat your own records!
How have other similar card games affected the design process for Monster Train 2?
The development team enthusiastically appreciates traditional Collectible Card Games (CCGs) such as “Magic: The Gathering” and “Hearthstone,” the latter offering Player versus Environment (PvE) draft modes with quick deck construction. Additionally, they admire games like “Slay the Spire,” which introduced a market for this genre and includes passive items that offer advantages, along with “Dream Quest,” the initial digital drafting roguelike that captivated our lead designer during a long Christmas holiday.
Absolutely, it’s worth mentioning “Slay the Spire“, a game that proved there is indeed an interest in this specific genre.
In what ways will the new factions in Monster Train 2 set themselves apart from their counterparts in the first game, Monster Train?
In the sequel, each fresh faction introduces unique gameplay elements that differ from the original, encompassing novel status effects and creative uses of Equipment and Room cards. For illustration, take the Banished clan in our demo, which allows units to fly to any position on the battlefield. This is facilitated by another innovative aspect, Unit Abilities, where individual characters possess special abilities with a cool-down period.
Are there any plans for post-launch content for Monster Train 2 in the form of expansions?
A truthful response is that its continuation will hinge on the success of the game in sales, however, we’re brimming with concepts for future content and are optimistic about providing updates following the game’s launch.
Can you give us an example of what we can expect from the new random events in Monster Train 2?
As a devoted admirer, let me share my excitement about the fresh, diverse random events in MT2 happening at “Celestial Alcoves” during gameplay. These events come with unique mechanics and choices, offering both rewarding advantages and occasional temporary setbacks. Some of these events even feature delightful characters from other games that the developers themselves are fond of. Although I can’t disclose which characters exactly, let me tell you, they add an exciting twist to Monster Train!
Will Monster Train 2 possibly include a multiplayer mode at some point in the future?
In “Monster Train 2”, there are multiplayer modes that don’t require everyone to play at the same time, such as the Daily Challenge, where you strive to surpass other players’ scores. At this moment, we don’t foresee implementing any synchronous multiplayer modes.

What kind of release window are you looking at for Monster Train 2?
Get ready, as the much-anticipated sequel to Monster Train, will be available starting May 21, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series S|X! We can hardly wait for all of you to experience it.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast and developer, I can’t help but express my curiosity about the rumored PS5 Pro. From a developer’s perspective, the reported upgrade in the GPU is truly intriguing. Compared to the base PS5, this boost could potentially offer improved performance for game development. It might allow us to push visual boundaries even further, introduce more complex game mechanics, or simply make the gaming experience smoother and more immersive for players. I eagerly await official announcements regarding the PS5 Pro, as it has the potential to revolutionize our creative process.
In summary, I’m always intrigued by new technology, and I appreciate Sony’s efforts in providing additional features to both developers and consumers. While Monster Train 2 doesn’t require heavy GPU power (although it certainly looks good!), the PS5 Pro’s superior GPU capabilities don’t have a substantial effect on this specific game. Nevertheless, I believe these enhancements are beneficial for games that can take advantage of them.
What are your thoughts on PSSR? What kind of opportunities will this open for the game?
This technology seems intriguing as it aims to boost frame rates in games that heavily tax the graphics card. However, it wouldn’t be beneficial for Monster Train 2, since it doesn’t require much from the graphics card to run smoothly.
What resolution and frame rates will the game target on the Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PS5 Pro?
In simpler terms, since our strategy game doesn’t require high-end graphics processing, we haven’t given much thought to optimizing it for powerful GPUs. Instead, the game operates at the screen resolution of the device it is connected to and strives to run smoothly at the refresh rate supported by that device.
Do you have any plans to launch the game on the Switch 2?
We have nothing to announce regarding Switch 2 currently.
