Nintendo Switch 2’s GameCube Controller: A Missed Opportunity?

Upon the release of Nintendo Switch 2 in June, individuals who subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will be granted access to play retro GameCube games via a novel app. Similar to the NES, SNES, N64, and Sega Genesis apps, Nintendo plans to introduce a fresh controller that mirrors the one released alongside the GameCube. This new controller shares many features with its predecessor, but boasts additional buttons at the top such as “Home,” “ZR,” and a screen capture option. However, this controller’s functionality presents a significant change compared to previous versions.

According to Nintendo Everything’s analysis, the UK trailer suggests that the new controller will be exclusively compatible with the GameCube app, which could be a significant departure from Nintendo’s usual approach with their retro controllers, as these can typically be utilized for games beyond their dedicated apps. This potential limitation would mean that the GameCube controller might not work with titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, raising concerns about this decision given its impact on gameplay. At present, it’s unclear if this is indeed accurate, but prospective buyers should be aware of this possibility.

Last week during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the GameCube app for Nintendo Switch Online was unveiled. Once released, subscribers will be able to play games such as Soul Calibur 2, F-Zero GX, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. During a media event for Nintendo Switch 2, ComicBook got the chance to try out the app and found that it functioned as expected. The games appeared to be true to their original versions, and the controller felt very authentic. For those seeking an affordable wireless GameCube controller for the system, this seemed like an excellent choice, since buying one of the old Wavebirds can be quite costly.

After trying out Switch 2, Nintendo conducted a discussion with the console’s designers. At this gathering, the designers revealed that the original GameCube controllers will still be compatible with the upcoming system, much like they are with the existing Switch. It is likely (but not certain) that these controllers would also work within the GameCube app on Switch 2. However, if this is the case, users will miss out on utilizing other buttons found on the new controller, such as the screen capture button.

Ideally, Nintendo will provide some insight into the GameCube controller to aid prospective buyers in making an informed choice. Using original controllers for classic games is usually a delightful experience, but if utilizing this controller is limited only to games within the Nintendo Switch Online app, it may not justify the cost.
