Actor Laurence Fishburne has graced numerous films with his presence throughout his illustrious career, spanning everything from intense dramas to side-splitting comedies. In certain of his most memorable roles, like Morpheus from the Matrix franchise, Fishburne delivers an aura of authority on screen that outshines other actors. In his upcoming movie, The Amateur, Fishburne has the chance to rekindle his mentor role, but despite what viewers might anticipate from him, he has shared why this project felt special for his career and why he felt compelled to take part. The Amateur will hit theaters on April 11th.
Laurence Fishburne shared that he doesn’t have extensive experience in espionage or spy-related roles. He mentioned his work on Hannibal as Jack Crawford and a movie called Bad Company in the ’90s with Ellen Barkin and Frank Langella, which had some elements of spying. More recently, he was in All the Old Knives alongside Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton. However, this new project offered him a chance to be part of a global spy thriller that takes place in various cities, not just the glamorous areas, but rather the grittier parts. Plus, working with Rami Malek was an opportunity he couldn’t resist.
Charlie Heller (Malek), a CIA employee with exceptional decoding skills but a reserved nature, works from a basement office at Langley headquarters. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack. Unwilling to accept this injustice, he decides to act independently and embarks on a perilous journey worldwide to find the perpetrators. His intelligence becomes his most powerful tool for escaping his pursuers and seeking retribution.
In addition to the main cast, this movie features Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, and Danny Sapani. James Hawes was the one who directed it.
Apart from Fishburne portraying characters who guide others, the actor shared his preference for the role he acted out to be his personal mentor if given the chance.
In 2014, I had an incredibly fortunate experience playing the esteemed Nelson Mandela, and if there was anyone whose knowledge and insights I’d eagerly learn from, it would be him – specifically, I’d be content to listen and learn at his feet. This is what Fishburne shared.
The Amateur lands in theaters on April 11th.
