Universal Destinations & Experiences has officially revealed plans to launch a new theme park in the United Kingdom, marking their first significant theme park venture in Europe. This upcoming park will deliver the same exhilarating, blockbuster encounters that have made its U.S. parks so iconic. Although specifics about the park are currently kept secret, Universal has hinted at a unique experience brimming with their most cherished franchises. Anticipating fans, expect lands and attractions inspired by Jurassic World, Minions, James Bond, Fast & Furious, Harry Potter, and Nintendo, catering to both adrenaline junkies and families with a range of offerings from heart-pounding rides to kid-friendly adventures. Preliminary sketches suggest immersive storytelling, lush surroundings, and thrilling activities for all ages.
According to Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences, the company is dedicated to crafting a genuinely distinctive experience tailored for the UK and European markets. The upcoming park will blend Universal’s iconic blockbuster essence with innovative, locally-inspired components aimed at stirring the curiosity of Europe’s fans.
For film and amusement park enthusiasts in the UK, this announcement carries great importance, as there had been prior proposals for a significant theme park within the country, notably a Paramount-themed park in Kent. Regrettably, these plans were abandoned in 2012 due to complications in obtaining planning approval. Now, the Universal park is poised to step into that gap, delivering top-tier attractions based on beloved movie series to the UK for the first time ever.
In the European theme park market, which has traditionally been dominated by Disneyland Paris for many years, Universal is set to enter the scene. Known for its large-scale themed experiences, Disneyland Paris has been a favorite choice for families seeking magical characters, fairy tales, and princesses. However, Universal’s new UK park could offer an exhilarating and thrilling alternative, given its popular franchises and high-octane rides. This could potentially challenge Disney’s dominance in Europe, particularly for those who prefer experiences beyond Disney’s traditional storytelling.
Disney maintains a strong hold over the worldwide theme park market, but Universal is picking up speed, particularly in the United States. The Universal Orlando Resort is gearing up for its next major advancement as Epic Universe is set to open in 2025, boasting new zones inspired by Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon, and Universal Monsters. At the same time, Universal Studios Hollywood has already broadened its horizons with Super Nintendo World, attracting massive attendance since its debut.
With its planned U.S. expansions and recent venture into the United Kingdom, Universal seems determined to increase its influence on the worldwide market. For the first time in Europe, Disney could potentially face formidable competition.
