Reboot of Beloved ’90s Monster Movie Secretly Scrapped (And the Director Reveals Why)

At some stage, director Christopher Landon was scheduled to helm a remake of “Arachnophobia”, but he’s now disclosed why this movie won’t be made. During interviews for his latest film “Drop”, Landon spoke with The Wrap and shared the reasons behind the stalled development on his “Arachnophobia” project. According to him, it was a common scenario in Hollywood where creative differences arose, as other individuals involved had their own concepts for the movie. Landon emphasized that while he wasn’t keen on sacrificing his vision for “Arachnophobia”, his departure from the project was friendly and mutual.

Landon shared, “I penned a script that I adored, truly believing it ranked among my finest works. However, the challenge lies in dealing with others who may have varying perspectives on the type of film we should produce. This instance exemplified creative disparities – something I was unwilling to compromise. Eventually, everyone moved forward, and that’s how things unfolded. Fortunately, it was an amicable parting.

A remake of “Arachnophobia” has been under development for several years now. James Wan took up the role of producer in 2018. Later, in 2022, Landon was brought on as director. In 2023, he offered an update, expressing his desire to make it his next project, but since then, there has been little news about it until recently.

The 1990 movie “Arachnophobia,” masterfully directed by Frank Marshall, garnered favorable criticism and proved to be a moderate hit at the box office. With a gross revenue of $53.2 million on a budget of $22 million, it showcased the perilous journey to eradicate an army of lethal spiders. These spiders were brought about by a massive South American spider unwittingly entering the U.S., becoming the central plot of the film and featuring stars like John Goodman and Jeff Daniels.

Disputes over creative direction are quite frequent in the movie business, but it’s unfortunate that such an instance has arisen here. Given his past achievements like the Happy Death Day series and Freaky, Landon has proven himself to be a gifted horror director who excels at blending horror with humor. This unique ability would have made him a perfect fit for directing an Arachnophobia remake, given that the original was acclaimed for its successful blend of horror and comedy. It would have been exciting to see Landon revisit these talents in this project. Judging by his past work, he likely would have created something both enjoyable and suspenseful. Regrettably, it didn’t happen as planned.

During an interview with The Wrap, Landon mentioned that the remake of Arachnophobia is still being worked on, making it intriguing to see who will be chosen as the director for this project. Despite having been in development for quite some time, there seems to be ongoing enthusiasm for bringing this movie to life. It’s possible that Wan, given his experience with horror movies, might choose to direct the film. Meanwhile, Landon is focusing on Happy Death Day 3, which has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the series.
