The ski community is mourning one of their own.
26-year-old former All-American skier Ellery “Ellie” Curtis passed away following a head injury, which occurred on April 5th, at a ski resort in Lake Tahoe, California. This information has been verified by local authorities to TopMob News.
On the formidable “Ahhh Chute” trail served by the KT-22 lift at the Palisades, as reported by Powder Magazine, a former student of Dartmouth College met with an accident and suffered several injuries during the descent.
Despite quick action from the ski patrol, who arrived within minutes, it was later verified by a representative of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department that the 26-year-old unfortunately died at the location itself.
In a heartfelt expression, I echo the sentiment of countless others as I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this cherished individual. Together, we journey through the unfathomable pain of this loss. – Elise Soviar, Communications Manager
Curtis is survived by her parents Charles Curtis and Katherine Dolan, as well as her sister.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the incredible achievements of this Vermont-born skiing sensation during her time at Dartmouth. Ranked seventh among women’s alpine skiers in the East, she truly shone on the slopes. In 2022, her prowess was recognized nationally when she clinched a spot on the All-American Second Team. This wasn’t just any achievement; it was the result of an eighth-place finish in the giant slalom at the prestigious NCAA Championships. Simply put, she left an indelible mark in the world of alpine skiing, and I can’t wait to see what she conquers next!
As a novice freshman, Curtis showcased both her talent and tenacity by achieving a second-place finish in her debut career podium at the team’s Winter Carnival. The next season, she participated in five carnivals, earning four top-seven finishes and two more podium achievements.
Her former university’s representative honored the skier by telling Powder Magazine that she was an extraordinary member of the Dartmouth community. Her spirit, kindness, and determination made a deep impact on everyone she met.
And the New Hampshire college’s women’s alpine ski coach John Dwyer echoed that sentiment.
In an interview with Valley News, Dwyer shared, “Ellie was exceptional. Not only was she one of the most dedicated individuals I’ve encountered during my decade at Dartmouth, but her diligence extended beyond the ski slopes as well. She was an outstanding scholar.
He conveyed that Curtis was “committed to becoming an exceptional skier” and showed this through “exploring the boundaries of skiing.
He found her swift and persistent,” he decided, “and nothing could possibly obstruct her path.
