The Amateur Star Caitriona Balfe Divulges New Details on Her Journey in Espionage

The Amateur” introduces Rami Malek as an amateur spy who finds himself thrust into a dangerous world of espionage, despite initially having no connections. As a series of lethal events unfold, Charlie, played by Malek, must quickly learn new abilities to survive. Thankfully, he’s not on his own, with Caitríona Balfe as Inquiline, a character who brings various skills to help Charlie pursue vengeance. Unlike the Robert Littell book from 1981 upon which it is based, Inquiline is an original character created for this film adaptation, providing Balfe the chance to build a fresh role. “The Amateur” is slated for release in theaters on April 11th.

Balfe shared with ComicBook about creating Inquiline. She said, “The script has everything you need for everyday life, but it gave me space to add my own touch and create my character’s background. I consulted with Rami [Said] and James [Hawes] to ensure my actions wouldn’t conflict with their vision. However, I was free to flesh out her inner world and history in a way that would not interfere too much with the main plot.

Characterized as “Charlie Heller (Malek)” is a CIA employee with exceptional decoding skills, who works secluded in a basement office at Langley headquarters. His tranquil life is disrupted when his wife perishes in a London terrorist attack, leaving the authorities unmoved to act. In response, he decides to take the matter into his hands, launching a perilous journey worldwide to identify and punish the perpetrators. His intelligence becomes his most potent tool for escaping capture and executing his vengeance.

Additionally, in this film you’ll find Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, and Danny Sapani. The director behind the scenes is James Hawes.

Drawing inspiration from creatures that intrude on other animals’ homes to claim them, the character name “Inquiline” holds a deep significance. Balfe explained how this name influenced her portrayal: “It’s beneficial to incorporate such details into a character, but I believe it’s essential to create a person who feels genuine. For me, it was less about her exterior traits and more about her inner world. Inquiline, being a solitary figure in many ways, had withdrawn from the world, yet she was simultaneously influential and striving to uncover corruption, speak truth to power, and shed light on terrible instances. This contradiction was fascinating. You take whatever you can, but most of the work is done subtly, filling in the gaps for yourself.

The Amateur lands in theaters on April 11th.
