While working on the set of “The Brady Bunch”, Barry Williams’ mind was consistently preoccupied with thoughts of Marcia.
In fact, the actor who was once a child star and portrayed Greg Brady in the series, shared insights about his real-life connection with Maureen McCormick, known for her role as Marcia Brady, their onscreen step-sibling.
Williams, aged 70, shared on the April 8th episode of The Real Brody Bros podcast, which he hosts with Christopher Knight, his co-star and brother’s character, that his relationship with Maureen had periods of being on and off over the years. He described it as a recurring pattern where there was a kind of dance being played, but this dance would occasionally pause during breaks.
Due to the complex on-and-off relationship, it posed a challenge for Williams to watch McCormick, who is 68 years old, interacting with her character’s romantic partners, such as the well-known ex-suitor named Charlie.
He went on to say, “While she was feigning affection with other men, going out on dates, and so forth, I preferred to keep a low profile and allow her to carry on. My attention was solely on my task and concentrating until an occasion came up where we had to sit next to each other.
Despite being 67 years old, the knight found it impossible not to tease about the discomfort of Williams and McCormick portraying a romantic relationship on screen, as they were playing siblings.
He playfully remarked, “It seemed like you two were getting quite familiar,” hinting at a resemblance that was perhaps beyond sibling bonds. At times, he noted, it looked as if the instructions for Charlie and Marcia’s scenes in the script were being followed.
To which Williams added he was probably looking at her “dreamy-eyed.”
Whenever McCormick interacted with characters such as Charlie, McCormick ensured that McCormick was present to oversee the situation. According to him, this was essential at all times and consistently, simply to maintain a noticeable presence.
This, of course, isn’t the first time either of the pair have addressed the former relationship.
In 2008, McCormick shared with TODAY that Barry and he had an intense pull towards each other. It was challenging for them to remain professional during their scenes because he found himself daydreaming about a romantic relationship between them.
She remarked, “There was an incredibly strong pull towards him. Performing as siblings in our scenes was uncomfortable. Eventually, others noticed. Thankfully, it was more of an on-off relationship. Now, we can only smile about it.
