“We believe that by continuing to expand Xbox Play Anywhere, we will be able to grow the ecosystem,” Xbox doubles down on cross-buy in new interview

During a conversation with 4gamer, Agnes Kim – who leads the strategic markets division for the Xbox platform at Microsoft – was queried regarding their approach to the Asian market and independent game creators thriving there.

Beyond Game Pass and collaborating with local developers, Agnes mentions that Xbox aims to broaden its reach in international markets by implementing the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative.

In our opinion, extending the Play Anywhere feature further allows us to broaden the gaming community and make these games accessible across various devices and locations. Yet, as emphasized by Agnes Kim during her interview, we won’t mandate this approach for developers; instead, they have the freedom to choose whether or not to adopt it.

To recap, Xbox Play Anywhere means that after buying a digital game for Xbox, you can play it on both your Xbox console and PC running Windows 10 or 11. Plus, your progress and achievements are automatically saved and synchronized across devices. This feature has been a key element in Microsoft’s recent strategy to elevate their ecosystem offerings.

The “Xbox” campaign aims to break down the usual barriers for gaming locations, and Xbox Play Anywhere serves as a tool to facilitate this change without requiring separate purchases of the same game on various platforms.

The question I ask is what incentivizes developers to feature these options?

It seems that many Game Pass deals often include the incorporation of Xbox Play Anywhere into a game. However, how might Microsoft encourage more developers to join this initiative?

Although some free-to-play games may use a similar approach, neither Assassin’s Creed: Shadows nor Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 resemble the concept of Xbox Play Anywhere.

Microsoft encounters a significant challenge persuading developers to adopt this feature, as there’s a possibility that gamers might end up paying more if they wish to play on several platforms.

What do you think?

Do you like hearing that Microsoft continues to push Xbox Play Anywhere?

For me, I’ve really taken a liking to this particular feature and have utilized it frequently while switching between my Xbox Series X in the living room and my gaming PC.
