On Sunday, the prominent Spanish football team Athletic Club will temporarily switch its game-day sponsor to that of “The Last of Us,” with the TV series logo displayed prominently on the players’ jerseys for this particular match. Additionally, the Max branding will be showcased on their sleeves during Athletic Club’s league game against Rayo Vallecano on April 13th – a day before the second season debut.
The logo of the brand can be seen on display at the team’s stadium, San Mames, and it will remain there until April 15th. Here we have winger Nico Williams, striker Gorka Guruzeta, and goalkeeper Unai Simón showcasing the jersey:
On the club’s official site, president Jon Uriate expressed his excitement about the opportunity to feature The Last of Us instead of regular sponsor Kutxabank (a Bilbao-based bank) for one game. He stated, “We are the last remnants of romantics, and much like in the series, we’re battling to preserve our unique identity in a challenging environment. This partnership symbolizes our dedication to innovate and expand Athletic’s brand on a global scale.
Uriate is discussing Athletic Club’s practice of recruiting athletes solely from their local Basque Country area. Unlike major teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona who invest vast amounts of money on foreign players, Athletic Club chooses to focus on homegrown talent within a population of approximately 2.2 million people. Surprisingly, despite this limitation, Athletic Club is currently ranked fourth in the La Liga standings.
Uriate stated that the series’ name is intriguing and truly encapsulates Athletic’s unique philosophy. As the only team in Europe‘s top five leagues still fielding exclusively homegrown players, it mirrors the authentic spirit of football from its early days.
This coming Sunday, the initial episode of Season 2 for The Last of Us premieres simultaneously on HBO and Sky. Previews from various media sources are already accessible if you’d like to catch up before watching.
