Black Mirror’s USS Callister Returns: Shock Reveal!

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Black Mirror season 7 episode USS Callister: Into Infinity.

After quite some wait, the anticipated follow-up episode of Black Mirror’s USS Callister has arrived, and it features a remarkable and surprising character comeback!

In the seventh season’s episode named “Into Infinity”, we find the USS Callister team, now led by Captain Nanette Cole (played by Cristin Milioti), battling to stay alive in a boundless virtual world, facing off against over 30 million opponents.

As a seasoned film critic, I found myself captivated by the intriguing premise where the protagonists recognize the necessity of venturing into the enigmatic Heart of Infinity. Their objective: to construct their exclusive sanctuary, isolating themselves from other players within an entirely unique cosmos.

It falls upon Walton (Jimmi Simpson) to disclose the chilling mystery concealed within the Heart of Infinity: a digital replica of Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), trapped as his youthful self in the garage where he developed Infinity, compelled to generate new worlds and perpetually expand the game.

As Nanette steps into the Infinite Core, she encounters another iteration of Daly, once again played by Plemons. At first, she feels a pang of pity for him, but it swiftly dawns on her that this doppelganger also embodies the sinister aspect of Daly which she’s all too familiar with.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself pondering from the start: “What could possibly continue this captivating tale, given its tragic ending?” The creative team clearly shared this curiosity, for they delved right into the heart of the mystery: the enigmatic force governing this extraordinary universe. By skillfully weaving in elements reminiscent of the original, they paid tribute to the narrative’s poignant finale – acknowledging the protagonist’s heroic sacrifice by ensuring his demise remains unforgotten.

Additionally, there’s a chance we may encounter a past iteration of this character, offering a fresh take on his story. This version seems reminiscent of a prequel, adding an intriguing layer to the character development and maintaining the originality that defines our concept.

Brooker commented: “Together, those two characters make a powerful scene. The transition from an epic space fight to a conversation in a garage is brilliantly done, and it keeps the intensity high, demonstrating their strong acting abilities.

Regarding the various aspects of Robert Daly portrayed by Plemons in that scene, Brooker commented: “In numerous ways, he’s flawed, yet you find yourself empathizing with him due to his pitiful state. He’s been mistreated by his superiors and endures a miserable existence.

“But he’s also… he’s clearly a troubled guy.”

Black Mirror season 7 also includes episodes like USS Callister: Into Infinity. One such episode is Hotel Reverie, featuring Emma Corrin and Issa Rae. This story revolves around a modern adaptation of an old movie. Another intriguing tale is Eulogy, where Paul Giamatti’s character experiences stepping into photographs from his past.
