GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 Will Seemingly Only Work With GameCube Games

Nintendo has announced that the upcoming GameCube controller for the Switch 2 will be compatible exclusively with GameCube games offered via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, as reported by VGC, which was revealed through a brief note in the GameCube games announcement video on the Nintendo UK YouTube channel.

The statement from Nintendo notes that the controller is exclusively designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics. However, it’s worth mentioning that the upcoming GameCube-style controller for the Switch 2 doesn’t seem to lack any essential buttons or features that would prevent it from functioning as a regular Pro Controller for the console. Intriguingly, this new controller actually includes a ZL button, which wasn’t featured on the original GameCube controller.

When you connect a GameCube controller to the Switch 2, it’s designed to function as if it were a standard Pro Controller. This may be Nintendo’s precautionary move to ensure compatibility across all console games, just in case the GameCube controller isn’t compatible with specific titles.

Fans of the Super Smash Bros. games have historically preferred the GameCube controller, particularly when playing games like GameCube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Switch’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If the GameCube controller is released for the Switch 2, it’s expected to be used in that specific market, as well as being embraced by fans of GameCube titles being ported to the console.

I’m super excited that Nintendo recently revealed GameCube games are heading to the Switch 2 via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack! This means I’ll be able to relive some classics on my new console. The upcoming service will offer a host of fresh features, such as online multiplayer, save states, and even rewinding gameplay. Can’t wait to dive in!

Initially, the following games from GameCube will be accessible on the Switch 2 at its release: “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker”, “Soul Calibur 2”, and “F-Zero GX”. Notably, the rendition of “Soul Calibur 2” for the Switch 2 will feature Link as a playable character. Additionally, “F-Zero GX” will offer multiplayer racing options, both locally and online, accommodating up to four players.

Additional GameCube games are set to join the Switch 2’s library, as mentioned in its announcement video. Notable titles such as Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion are expected to be added later on. Additionally, lesser-known games like Super Mario Strikers, Chibi-Robo: Plug Into Adventure, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will also become available through the service.

It’s quite possible that the reason for adding GameCube games to the subscription service is due to the enhanced processing power of Switch 2 compared to its previous model. It should be mentioned that these GameCube games won’t be accessible via the subscription on the original Switch.

The GameCube compilation and its matching controller are set to debut on the same day as the Switch 2’s release on June 5th.
