The Crew – Ubisoft Argues in Lawsuit That Players Never Had Ownership of the Game

Despite Ubisoft closing down servers for its racing game “The Crew” as far back as 2024 and removing it from digital stores in 2023, their decision has faced criticism. Most recently, Ubisoft is facing legal action by two former players of “The Crew,” who claim that the company breached consumer protection laws in California.

In response to the lawsuit, Ubisoft has asked the court to throw out the case. The company’s legal team contends that the plaintiffs lack valid ownership of the game because they merely bought a permit to play it under specific terms. Essentially, they argue that the players don’t own the game but only have limited rights to access it.

After learning that Ubisoft plans to stop supporting a game after a specified time, as stated on the product, customers are taking legal action. They are claiming, on behalf of potentially many others, that Ubisoft has broken eight different laws and regulations in California, such as false advertising, unfair competition, and breach of warranty, as well as common law fraud. This is known as a ‘kitchen sink’ approach, meaning they are throwing every possible claim at the issue.

The plaintiffs have countered Ubisoft’s claim by updating their lawsuit with images of the packaging for The Crew. The packaging indicates that activation codes for the game will be valid until 2099. According to the plaintiffs, this implies that The Crew would continue to be playable throughout this period and beyond.

Previously, when The Crew’s servers were deactivated by Ubisoft, it was rumored that they were blocking access to the racing game for players. This was problematic because without active online servers, the game could no longer be played. Nevertheless, some fans had hoped that The Crew might be kept alive through player-run servers.

It appears that users are encountering an issue where they can’t open the game from their library page. Instead, they see a message saying “Access to this game has been revoked. Perhaps you might want to revisit the store to continue your journey?

Ever since I first got my hands on “The Crew”, Ubisoft has been adding more to this fantastic series with two sequels – “The Crew 2” and most recently, “The Crew Motorfest”. As a dedicated fan, it was exciting to learn that the latest installment, “The Crew Motorfest”, which initially could only be played on PC via Ubisoft Connect and Epic Games Store, is now also available on Steam. What a thrill!
