2024’s breakout indie sensation, Balatro, has unexpectedly appeared on Netflix’s dark anthology series, Black Mirror.
In the most recent season, the game mysteriously appears, leaving me absolutely astounded. Earlier today, there were subtle signs that something was brewing, beginning with a cryptic tweet from the Balatro team.

Initially, the post that said “You might want to have a closer look in the mirror today” appeared harmless. However, upon second thought and after others brought attention to it, it’s clear now that the capitalized ‘Mirror’ wasn’t merely a typo!
Balatro is in Episode 3 of the new season of Black Mirror ‘Hotel Reverie’
In Episode 3 of Season 7, titled “Hotel Reverie”, is where Balatro is introduced. Exactly at the 8-minute and 55-second mark, you’ll notice one of the characters engaged in the game on their computer. Since I haven’t completed the season yet, I hurried to that scene to capture a screenshot, ensuring no spoilers were revealed. For enthusiasts of the series as well as Balatro fans, it’s a delightful Easter egg worth discovering.
Charlie Brooker was addicted to Balatro, just like the rest of us
Months prior in an August 2024 Deadline interview, Charlie Brooker spoke about his fascination with the roguelike poker game Balatro. At the time he mentioned it was available on Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and soon to be released on mobile devices. He also hinted at its potential addictiveness, stating that it served as a reward for him during writing sessions. Interestingly, Brooker didn’t mention that Balatro had already been added to Xbox Game Pass in the meantime, but we can overlook this since the interview was published before that happened.
Brooker also expressed his affection for Ghost of Tsushima and Dave the Diver, so it’s possible that these games might be incorporated into the series as well.
